2021-22 Toronto Maple Leafs General Discussion

I don't think anyone expected Tavares' contract to be an absolute steal, especially once it got into the second half of it. But we'd probably have different thoughts about it's value right now if the cap was hovering around $90mil like most people projected it to be by this time. As long as he's scoring around the PPG mark then I don't see the point about stewing over his deal, even if the post-covid market has made it tougher to deal with.

And he wins faceoffs like a machine.

Of course he's overpaid.  So is every last one of 'em.

This is something I saw most of the Leafs doing this season: shooting quicker! See Mikheyev and Engvall's goal scoring in particular. Not necessarily harder or more accurately, but like very minimal dust off time and just cradling the pass to load the shot (Matthews-esque) and firing from dangerous space while coming downhill to the slot in motion. Significant commitment to puck retrieval off the shot also helps mitigate any accuracy loss.

Marner is playing beautifully at the moment -- head empty, just enjoying the game, and getting into space to play or shoot the puck. His shooting percentage is unsustainable, so no one should expect this torrid scoring pace to last, but if he can bottle this feeling and uncork it every so often, the Leafs are in good position to do significant playoff damage (Matthews' health notwithstanding).

Bunting passed McDavid for 1st in the league in 5-on-5 penalties drawn with 24 this season (in over 100+ less minutes).

Last season Matthews and Tavares led the Leafs in that category with 13 (in 52 and 56 games respectively).

We only have 3 games in the next 9 days (including today) and its a West coast road trip.  So if he has to sit for a few games it doesn't really hurt the lineup too much.  Then the schedule gets ugly.

Yeah, Keefe's remarks today were all optimistic.  I think he'll be ready on Thursday.  I hope so anyhow.

The two opponents this week, Calgary and Carolina, are two very good teams with some of the fewest blocked shots in the league. Do you pay attention to those kinds of things? Do you notice it?

Keefe: I don?t pay a whole lot of attention to the stat of it. There are certainly times when we watch pucks come to our net ? can we do a better job of being in the lane and preventing it from getting there? With the actual stat itself, there is a lot of noise inside that stat. We are one of the teams, as is Carolina, that spends a low amount of time in our own end. If there are fewer pucks heading towards our net, we have fewer opportunities to block them. That is part of it.

When I look at last night?s game as an example, I think there were times where we could have done a better job of being in the lane. Sometimes, I feel like if you do your job defensively, you are in the lane, and you close space, you should discourage the shot. I prefer we discourage the shot than block the shot, frankly.

If they can?t direct the puck to the net and they have to put the puck back to another spot where we can kill the play and break out, that is better to me than allowing teams to continuously put it towards your net. You are going to block a good percentage of them, but some are going to find a way through. That is trouble.

I thought we let some get through last night where I would like to see a better job. The stat itself is not something I focus on too much.

Not sure why I was thinking this, but is there any benefit to considering PK Subban next year? This, assuming he'd take a Justin Holl-like salary.

He might be able to rebound some with reduced minutes/responsibility. Could be worth a shot.

My heart says "hell ya". My brain isn't so sure. At this point in his career on a top team his ideal role is likely RHD 3rd pair/sheltered minutes and right now it still looks like that spot is for Liljegren next season. If as the rest of the season/playoffs progresses it looks like he can make the jump up onto that 2nd pair though then it definitely opens up a spot for Subban.

I feel like PK playing in a big market like Toronto could add a little juice to his game.

I almost think the salary is less a consideration than the term. If he's good with a one year deal where he might be open to some time on the Marlies, sure. We don't want another Nick Ritchie situation though where you get caught up in liking the sound of an experiment and offer two years.

Do you guys think Dubas is going to do anything at the trade deadline? Personally, I don't think adding a depth forward or depth defenseman is worth the picks. I like the team the way it is. You can always have more depth but at high price-tags, I'd pass.

Defensive depth for sure..Schenn, Mayfield type. I don't see him adding up front.
