2022-23 NHL Thread

Guys just love making up rules to adhere to

?At training camp, you get a (swag) bag with a bunch of stuff in it,? Maple Leafs defenseman Morgan Rielly said. A former teammate was using it as his travel bag. ?We said if he showed up for the next flight with that bag, it?s a $500 fine.?

Most players surveyed for this story agree $500 is the de facto fine amount.

The NBA just quietly finalizing a new 7-year CBA.  Would be nice if the NHL ownership have a rats behind about growing the game in a positive way without every labour negotiation starting with lockout threats

Preds and Flames go to a shootout. Both teams need every point they can get to remain in playoff contention.

Jonathan Huberdeau scores on Calgary's 1st attempt.

Nashville's first 2 players don't score.

Calgary's 3rd shooter has a chance to score and keep the Flames alive.

Daryl Sutter puts the Calgary Flame's playoffs hopes and dreams on the shoulders of one individual. He calls on Nick Ritchie to take their 3rd shootout attempt. A goal, and they're still alive. A miss, Calgary could be eliminated from the playoffs.

I don't need to tell anyone here what happened next.

So Markstrom didn't stop the 3rd or 4th shots lol.

Weren't the Flames the "most likely Canadian team" to win the cup(as chosen by sports analysts) at the start of the season?

That wasn't part of Sportsnet's predictions but:
Which Canadian team will finish with the most regular season points?

Elliotte Friedman: Calgary Flames
Jeff Marek: Edmonton Oilers
David Amber: Edmonton Oilers
Justin Bourne: Edmonton Oilers
Nick Kypreos: Edmonton Oilers
Wayne Scanlan: Toronto Maple Leafs
Eric Engels: Calgary Flames
Sam Cosentino: Toronto Maple Leafs

Dan Murphy: Toronto Maple Leafs
Christine Simpson: Edmonton Oilers
Gord Stellick: Toronto Maple Leafs
Ryan Dixon: Calgary Flames
Mark Spector: Toronto Maple Leafs
Ken Wiebe: Toronto Maple Leafs
There was also:

Pacific Division regular season winner

4 of the analysts picked Calgary to win the West, but none predicted them to win the Cup.

Season opening predictions are hard, but SportsNet people are just bad at it.
Please don't look for my October 11 predictions in this thread.

That's goaltending man. Calgary's starter went from a Vezina nomination and .922 Sv% last season to .892 Sv% this season. Boston's starter last season had a .917 Sv% but got replaced in the playoffs after 2 games and followed that up with like maybe a top-5 goalie performance of all-time this season.

Goaltending is voodoo.

That Chicago lineup just beat the Penguins in essentially a must win game.  Mrazek proving the Leafs gave up on him too soon

That's embarrassing for the Pens. Like next level embarrassing. They were even the home team so you could "line match" against those AHLers

I kind of hope the Isles get the 8th spot. I think they have a chance to upset with their defensive game and Sorokin.

I feel similarly.

Isles beat Montreal tonight. Pens are out.

For the above to happen, we need Florida to beat Carolina tomorrow.
They have the incentive to avoid Boston.
I think Isles have the tie breaker if Florida gets an OT point.

I think this is an interesting step, especially in contrast to how watching NHL coverage has been swamped in the last couple of years

https://theathletic.com/4407869/2023/04/13/premier-league-gambling-betting-sponsors-ban/

For those without a subscription, the basic premise is that gambling companies will be banned from becoming shirt front sponsors in the next couple of seasons.

At the minute small ads and pitch side ads are still allowed, but I think this could be a first step to it all going. Similar to how smoking companies were phased out and now you never see them.
