2022-23 NHL Thread

I can see a Situation where you've a team 2 men down with ~2 minutes left leading by a goal and the losing team pulls the goalie for the 6 on 3 and gets a couple of goals to win.

Not sure if it's a good or bad thing, though!

A powerplay getting wiped if a team scored on a delayed penalty never really made any sense to me. I think seeing the other two changes get implemented to the NHL as well would be cool but the delayed penalty one is probably the only one that has a realistic chance of seeing the light of day here.

It sort of does.  The team can pull their goalie and add a skater on a delayed penalty with no real repercussions since as soon as the offending team touches the puck play is blown dead.  I guess that gives them an advantage, and if they score, they have taken advantage of that man advantage therefore justice has been served.

Ending the PP if a SHG is scored is pretty weird and just a dumb idea.  Makes no sense.

The full 2 minute penalty regardless of a goal scored or not is an interesting one.  It may be more of a deterrent to committing minor infractions.

That feels like it should just be an added bonus that a team gets to take advantage of though. I mean if a team scored on a delayed penalty before the goalie was able to reach the bench or before the 6th skater was able to join the attack then they never really got that advantage AND they don't get their deserved powerplay. Almost makes it so the penalized player essentially gets off scot-free, at least for his individual mistake.

Interesting peak into the intrigue of the Pen's front office. Wondering if one day we get an expose like that on the Leafs' recent machinations.

In the 2016 NHL Draft, Canadian teams had 7 of the top 11 picks, and 5 of the top 6. Only 1 player from that draft is playing for the Canadian team that drafted them, Auston Matthews. Pretty crazy.

I still would like to see penalties matter late in a game.  If you take a delay of game or crosschecking penalty with 40 seconds left in a 1 goal game, there is potentially incentive to take a late penalty to kill momentum and not leave enough time to get the PP set up.  If there is PK time left on the clock in a 1 or 2 goal game I'd like to see the PP carry over for the full amount.

Carry over to where? You talking about extending the game until the penalty would expire?

Yep.  Maybe only if it's a one goal game but if you take a penalty with less than 2 minutes left in the game, you face the entirely of the penalty.

I don?t like the idea of extending the game, but I get where you?re going with this Minor penalties in the final minute should be a penalty shots. Majors in final two minutes should be a penalty shot and the power play.

Yeah that's an interesting alternative.  I like it

Man, I don't like either of those ideas very much. A team has played 59 minutes working to have the lead and in a scramble grabs a stick or flips a puck over the net and suddenly they're getting a penalty shot against them? Yeah, not a fan.

Any judgement call late in a close game that would result in a mandatory penalty shot will simply result in the bar raised even higher than it is now.

Yup, they wouldn't call anything.

The NHL .............................................................................. the room

I know Gary does the bidding of the owners but holy hell they need a new voice running the NHL.

I agree with pride night and pride jerseys, but I'm wondering if this is like a bud light situation... 🤷???

The NHL made the right decision about the Pride Night jerseys.  The fans can still celebrate their Pride Night at the arena with less distraction & publicity.  As well, this protects the Russian players/families & those players who have personal or religious objections.  Finally something that the NHL got correct.  There is no way 100% forced player compliance would happen, nor should it happen.

Nobody said anything about "forced compliance" for the players.  This is about the NHL saying they're a progressive league, and marketing "hockey is for everyone", yet they shrink away because a certain percentage of players and fans don't like gay people. If they really want to support the movement, continue to have the special jerseys and the players that want to wear them in warmup can.  It continues the discussion, instead of what they're trying to do, just hide it and hope nobody ever brings it up again.  What a backwards and broken league.

The NHL awards show continues to be basically completely pointless but the Hart voting results showed McDavid almost unanimously winning the Hart trophy:

The search is on for whoever only gave him a 5th place vote (it wasn't Haggerty in Boston).
