With Conforto going to the Giants as well as Taylor Rogers it's looking pretty clear that the Jays aren't going to be able to improve the team much past what they have via Free Agency. While they still have cards to play and a Chapman-esque deal might open up down the road, it's hard not to think right now that this will be another off-season like last year's where they were active and saw a lot of change but didn't really make the team a whole lot better.

I can't help but think that the Jays misjudged what they were going to do to replace Teo's bat in the lineup.
If they had a plan, I'm not sure why we wouldn't have seen it by now.

Yeah. Even if they were determined to trade Teo you almost think that he'd be considerably more valuable right now with all the bats off the market and teams still looking to improve.
Obviously they still have chips to play but I don't think there's any getting around the reality that they whiffed a bit here in December.

I wouldn't rule it out but the catching market has definitely narrowed. St. Louis, Atlanta and Milwaukee have all upgraded already so I don't know how long the list is of teams that need catching, have the sort of pieces the Jays want and are motivated to try and be competitive this year.

The Diamondbacks have a surplus of outfielders and could use a catcher.

Moreno is a great prospect and losing him could definitely bite them but there's no doubt that this move gives them exactly what we've been saying they need. It also creates a situation where they have pretty unlimited options with their outfield defense where all three guys can play all three positions very well.

Giving up Moreno hurts, but Varsho is a damn good addition - especially if he can hit down on the Ks. Outfield defence has been seriously upgraded this off season.

Definitely a win now move. Outfield is complete.
Gurriel going to Arizona as well. Can't say I love that.
Varsho ranked as the top defensive outfielder in the Majors last year by outs above replacement (18).

Springer, Varsho, Kiermaier, Merrifield can all play CF so I think a rotation of some sort there. No, I don't think Keirmaier is the everyday CF. I see him more as the Springer fill-in (Springer won't play a full season). With Gurriel leaving in the trade as well, I feel the outfield is less than complete.

I keep forgetting Merrifield wasn't a rental.
I still think you need to add a bat. The shake-ups and injury concerns during a regular season is one thing but right now if you try to make a playoff-lineup for this team either you need to use your backup catcher at DH(not ideal) or you put a not very inspiring hitter in the line-up. That may be a deadline sort of thing but as is, it still feels like dealing both Teoscar and Lourdes means the team is offensively not ideal right now.

Seems like the Jays have come out marginally better than last year overall but will be worse offensively while have considerably better outfield defense. Going from two of the worst fielders to two of the best will be noticeable. BVarsho might benefit a decent amount by the shift being banned

Jays signed Bo Bichette to a 3-year extension avoiding an arbitration hearing. Numbers haven't come out and this does nothing to ensure that Bo stays long-term but that's a nice thing to not sour the relationship over arbitration hearings.
The Jays also signed Chad Green who is currently recovering from Tommy John surgery but has been a solid reliever for the Yankees the last few years. He won't be ready for the start of the season but could be a big add mid-way through.
They released Matt Gage who feels like a guy who did all the right things except get a fair shot at the Majors
1.38 ERA 0.923 WHIP and 12 strikeouts in 13 innings last year in the Majors
2.34 ERA 1.087 WHIP and 46 strikeouts in 42 innings last year in AAA

Maybe I'm cherry picking here, but does it not feel like the Jays are always grabbing players that are coming off major surgery or injury and hoping they hit the jackpot? Ok, maybe not the jackpot, but hoping the player can regain some sort of form that they once showed? It kind of feels like playing the penny slots.
