2023-24 Toronto Maple Leafs General Discussion

Yup.  The panel with Colaiacovo and Corrado were all praising the Canadian teams trading their 1st round picks "going for it".  Last I checked all 3 of those teams are in the west, they can't all win the Cup,  in fact they might all 3 not go anywhere in the playoffs, so is trading your first a great move if they all get bounced in rounds 1-2?

The teams that make "big swings" don't make the finals all that often. The biggest moves that included moving a 1st round pick from teams that got to the final, they were for guys like Tatar, Savard, Goodrow, Hagel, etc. rather than the big names.

With a healthy D (Timmins is basically healthy, and Gio is skating so his return is also on the horizon) Lagesson would be the #10 D in the organization. So obviously not the end of the world, but the dude was a really good soldier for the team this season so unfortunate to see him go.

It is.  He did his job and didn't make any glaring mistakes.

Sounds like they're trying to do something but I really don't see it happening. I think the Leafs end today with a thud. Unfortunately I'm not too jazzed about this roster for playoff success... Just don't have the right kind of horses I don't think.

Not particularly enthused by much of what's being moved/supposedly available, either.

Also, big moves at the deadline jsut rarely pan out. Standing pat/only making the types of smaller moves the Leafs have already made is usually the best course of action. Not as exciting, but smarter asset management.

True but they really could've used a depth forward. I would've taken a flyer on Tarasenko at his cost or Toffoli.

C'mon Anaheim, why?

Yeah that makes no sense, Anaheim isn't doing anything this year.

They get him there. Try him out. See how he likes it.
And try to sell him on playing there if they like what they see.

If he plays anything like he played here, they'll want him.

I didn't know much about him or how he played in Edmonton or wherever.
But I know what I saw here. I thought he played pretty darn well.
He had a couple of games together that were not so hot. Otherwise, as I recall, he was pretty good.
He was not far behind Benoit and was a little better rounded.
He was not a bad PKer either from what I saw.
I would have liked to have seen him more to be more conclusive.

However, as I felt yesterday, I would have been surprised if he cleared.

Like Burke said: he's a found wallet.

I'm okay with the Leafs just having tinkered the last couple days.  They don't have the draft capital to burn, nor should they continue to do so with the structure of the team.  Let things play out this season, and re-evaluate in the summer.  It just sucks that yet another prime year of Matthews, Marner and Nylander is likely going to be wasted.

It won't be if all 3 show up at once in the playoffs.  Hasn't happened yet, and until it does they have no chance of winning a Cup.

Knies potential injury update. That's obviously very good to hear.

Brad filled out some gaps on the floor of the team, PK + more assholes. Not sure who he was trying to get with the cap space he paid picks for (retention), but clearly it didn?t drop.

LaJoie played for the Marlies tonight, Robertson didn't

Treliving did exactly what he should have: a couple of minor upgrades following a minor-to-middling one with Lyubushkin.  No blowing of draft picks on stupid feelgood rentals.  His post-mortem comments were right: the top guys have to be the top guys.

The team is paying for Dubas's repeated misjudgments of how far along they were at various points in his tenure.  There is time for one more re-set during the prime of 34/16/88 (which, I believe, ought to include a new coach unless Keefe takes them deep somehow this year).

I wouldn't have minded him going for a guy like Toffoli who didn't cost a lot...2nd and a 3rd. Leafs could have offered up something similar...replace the 2nd with a B prospect. While I agree its up to the top guys, adding a scorer like Toffoli would have been nice. They've never done that.

Nick Kypreos noted this week that the Leafs? first-rounder was on the table [for Tanev] and Calgary went with another offer.

If the first was offered and Calgary wouldn?t accept it, I don?t think Treliving could justify upping the ante further for a 34-year-old pending UFA.
