2023-24 Toronto Maple Leafs General Discussion

https://mapleleafshotstove.com/2024/03/07/cade-webbe-toronto-maple-leafs-prospect/

No offensive element at all, but maxed out on all the defensive markers.

For a future 6th rd pick (trade with Carolina) this seems like a decent bet as we normally pick this type of project prospect in that range anyway, but this one is expedited to pro-playable.

Sorry that was a typo in my part. Meant to say scouting not scoring.

I seem to remember in another thread that his scouting profile is of the opinion that he has no NHL potential.

He seems to have taken a step forward this season, which a lot of publicly available scouting reports would not have considered yet (or at all - a lot don?t get updated post draft).

His NHL potential is still limited, but he might be a potential 3rd pairing type - which, for a 6th round pick, is reasonable value.

... maybe as a PK specialist - has the size to clear the crease.

I think they missed Holl in that role this year

The way the Leafs prefer their defensemen to play from goaltender out:
- stop the cycle, free up puck for teammate
- disrupt the entry, free up puck for teammate
- pass the puck to the forwards where all the cap dollars are
- kettle the puck in the OZ by passing it to the forwards and pinching down the boards to stifle 50/50 breakouts

These shouldn?t be too hard, or too expensive to find in the market. Once you try to get more scoring skill, that?s when it starts to cost cap space.

I def think they missed PK Holl this year. 5v5 Holl not so much

Maybe we'll see you next year, Matt ...

Didn't see the games but the stats are not encouraging.

He hadn't played in over a year and had bilateral hip surgery. The fact he played 3 games is a huge win.

I'd sign him to either some kind of league minimum deal, with maybe performance bonuses (can you do that?) or at least bring him to camp with a view to earning a contract.

He's next year's Martin Jones

I'm not against firing Keefe at this point. Not sure which candidate could replace him. If Gruden can get the Marlies to win today, he will have an MLSE team win a series. I think Keefe made a serious mistake in playing Samsanov.  To many weak goals.  Also we need a new D. I hope some of these big men work out.
I am an long advocate for trading Marner (if we can get him to waive) and then we can plug and play Cowan next year. May even end up being an upgrade.  More of a North South guy.

Also we should know what Matthews is battling, hasn't been the same player since Game 2.

Are you shitting me? I'm an advocate for trading Marner too, but that's because I want an all-star goalie. Cowan shows great promise, but there's no way he's going to be an upgrade

We have a Goalie tandem. Woll/Hildeby
With Jones or Murray as back up.
If Marner goes it?s for some high draft picks and a stud D man.

Marner for a stud D is my preference. I'm not a Marner hater, he's just the most realistic guy to trade of the four, and I want them to move money from the forwards to the blue line.

Who's that D man you think would be available?

Not sure, if no one is available then at least 2 1st?s and a very good prospect or player
Main thing is to open up the cap space so we have the resources to settle affairs with all the five families.

The Leafs aren?t a rebuilding team. They?re not going to run with what are essentially two rookies and an older goalie who has all but flamed out of the league.

I don't know the answer, but if Marner is available, I'm sure some D-men will become available. It's all moot anyway, it's unlikely he'd waive his NTC.
