2024-25 General Trades and Signings

This one doesn’t make sense for either team. It’s perfect.

EDIT: Unless maybe Pittsburgh flips Schenn with retention, which Nashville can’t do as they’ve used all their available spots. Still not sure why Nashville does it, but I can kinda see it from Pittsburgh’s POV if this happens.

NSH got a 4th and saved 401k

For PIT, Nothing wrong with scooping up a C and RD (the two most coveted positions) to flip in a seller’s market

That’s been his way for a while. Certainly not doing their farm system any favours. They’re now in the middle of a 5 year stretch with no 1st round pick. They don’t have much in house to help extend their window, that’s for sure,
1st rounders for 3rd liners. I have a feeling it is going to be a quieter deadline (it already seems that way) with those prices which will lead some GMs under pressure to do some crazy sort of deal. As Friedman said, whatever the Leafs do, the assets won't come cheap. Treliving is in a tough spot because his window may be closing too.

His window to do a deal you mean?

Window to win a Cup might look almost shut if things like Marner departs, Tanev's age starts to show, Rielly & Matthews don't bounce back, the goalies start to show warts, etc. I have a feeling the max window is Matthews current contract. With Marner's UFA status, they don't have many decent kids coming along who will fill those elite shoes. I feel like they're roughly similar to Tampa that way. I don't like trading young assets but under the circumstances, I could easily see Treliving doing so and I'm not sure I could harshly criticize him. This might be the last shot with Matthews-Marner.

Do many teams have young kids to fill shoes such as Marner's? I'd think that most teams either have kids with Marner's potential, or actual elite players like Marner on the roster....but not both. And most times, they don't have either.

Not to say that I'm advocating for the Leafs to let Marner walk but I mean if it does then Nylander just slides up to the 1RW spot instead. Obviously there would be a lot of trickle down effects to that but that's what an extra $12-15mil in cap space is for.

This is shaping up to be another wet-fart deadline for the Leafs eh?

Also: I am SO happy I'm an Eagles fan
I think we're looking down the barrel of an underwhelming trade deadline in general. Not a lot of clear sellers, so prices are high. We'll almost certainly see the typically flurry of depth moves and minor tweaks, but probably not much in terms of actually exciting moves.
