2024-25 General Trades and Signings

That might not be a bad thing. This isn’t really the year to push all your chips in. They don’t have the assets, Matthews is sputtering and the team is flawed.

We hear this all the time in Toronto though, "not the year". What happens if Matthews keeps sputtering from here on in, if it's something physical with him, he needs surgery and never gets back to the Matthews we know? Just give up and rebuild again?

He's not his lethal self today.

I truly thought the o’reilley/schenn year was the year to push all the chips in. I pretty much agree with all the moves that happened that year.

I don’t know about give up and rebuild, but definitely re-tool.

I mean they could be partway there with Tavares and Marner walking. But I don’t have a lot of faith in the Treliving regime. I’ve been mostly unimpressed with him.

Yup, if the playoffs fizzle out again this season, are they REALLY gonna run it back yet again with Marner/Tavares? 22 million in cap space to replace those two, no idea if anyone in free agency would make a difference but at least re-allocate that 22 million to improve the team elsewhere. Maybe even trade Rielly in the summer, everything should be on the table.

I remember the spring of 2016, all excited after winning the draft lottery, finally hoping we would draft a #1 overall impact center and eventually the Leafs would win a Cup. It's now 2025 and most of that 2016 hope is gone.

Then we should have traded off assets in the off-season and retooled because having this team potentially walk Tavares and Marner to free agency isn't making the team better next year.

Tanev doesn't get better by being a year older. Matthews is sputtering but his health stuff has to be a real concern beyond this year. He's not out with a dislocated shoulder. He's handicapped by his back or his wrist or who know what else. Why bother competing any year at this point. The team has goaltending right now and is sitting up near the top of the standings and our division rivals are all unloading assets to get better.

When is the year to try with what we have. And I'm not actually advocating that we blow our limited prospects/picks but I don't know that that we are going to be in better shape to go in on things in any of the next few years that we are now. It feels like the discussion around the deadline has been the same thing every year now. The prices are stupid because the cap has forced 80% of the league to be within 8 points of each other so fewer teams will sell cheaply.

Honestly I can’t disagree with this. I’m just kinda so meh on the team this last 2 seasons I’m finding hard to get worked up one way or the other.

I think a lot of Leafs fans are in the same mindset right now. I've hoped and watched this team for so long now, i'm just numb to anything at this point. "Build through the draft!", "sign free agents!", "make a huge trade!", nothing has ever worked out for this team (in the ultimate "Worked out" sense of at LEAST making the Cup Finals) So I don't really care what the direction is, as long as I get to see a damn Cup before I die.
