2024-25 General Trades and Signings

That and the Leetch deal were both absolute great trades for the Leafs. Still have vague memories of people freaking out about losing Maxim Kondratiev.

Friggin lockout.

You know what sucks about that is all those players (except housley I think) were still under contract for the lockout season. That leafs team was stacked and would have been awesome. And then came the dark times.

It was only a handful of games but I still think even a 30-something year old Brian Leetch was the best defenceman I've ever seen play in a Leafs uniform. Losing a full season of that was brutal.

What if it was McCaulay and Boyes for like Yanic Perreault? It depends who we get back to make it worth it. Owen Nolan was a prototypical power forward.
Yeah I’m not arguing with that. I just mean that’s what the leafs needed at the time and fans at the time waaaaay overvalued boyes and mccauley. That’s where I was coming from.

It’s hilarious that we both just independently referenced Yanic Perreault in 2 different threads.

I haven't thought about where he fits in Leafs history but he was a very special player. I did not realize how special until we got to see him as a Leaf. Maybe it is emotional but I'm probably partial to Salming who was not as skilled but had stronger other elements to his game.

Worth clarifying I think I was like 13 or 14 when Leetch played here. So the list of great defencemen I've personally actually watched isn't particularly deep. It was like Leetch, Kaberle, and Svehla I'd say in that early 2000s era. Then Rielly. Now Tanev.

Too bad you never got to watch Salming. Not only best D man ever for the Leafs, best player ever. Guy was Lidstrom before there was Lidstrom but even better for me. Sliding poke checks, shot blocking out of this world and had a great offensive side.

On the other end of the scale, '64 Leafs Horton, Stanley, Brewar, Baun - I reflected on those guys as I thought about it. Baun was the least skilled but I liked him. In the physical condition they were in at that time, with their old equipment, etc, they would probably have a tough time cracking a NHL roster today. It is tough to compare over a long time span. One of the reasons the Leafs have not won a Cup in so long may be that they never had a dman good enough to win a Norris while playing for them. Of the three I can think of who played for the Leafs and won a Norris with another team, Leetch seemed handily better than Carlyle or Giordano.

Ha! What an awesome coincidence.
