2024-25 NHL Thread

The fact is Swayman has played 14 games and has been with the team for a month and a half. This isn't a missed training camp thing, this is a struggle to find his game thing and add in the team is not that good defensively. And he's not weeks behind shooters. He wasn't sitting at home with his feet up.
There's a huge difference between training on your own and training with NHL players, coaches, etc. It's not even in the same universe. He was still doing the kinds of things everyone was doing all summer, while the rest of the league had moved on to team practices, game situations, etc. That left him weeks behind.

Also, part of the reason he's struggling to find his game is that he started out behind. It's awfully hard to find your game in season as a goaltender, as we've seen time and time again. There are other factors at play, sure, but missing training camp is a hugely significant one.

Does anyone remember when this happened to the leafs in the playoffs? They put Reichel’s name beside Renberg’s number so they didn’t allow Renberg to play. So the leafs were short a roster player the whole game.

Looks like stamkos still got to play, so a penalty doesn’t seem like a big deal at all.

This situation was just an error on their starting lineup card, not the roster, so Stamkos wasn't disqualified from playing.

Yeah so that’s where I’m confused. You have to submit who the starting 5 are going to be in addition to all the players?

Rule 7 – Starting Line-up
7.1
Starting Line-up - Prior to the start of the game, at the request of the Referee, the Manager or Coach of the visiting team is required to
name the starting line-up to the Referee or Official Scorer. Prior to the start of the game, the Manager or Coach of the home team, having been advised by the Official Scorer the names of the starting line-up of the visiting team, shall name the starting line-up of the home team. This information shall be conveyed by the Official Scorer to the Coach of the visiting team. No change in the starting line-up of either team as given to the Official Scorer, or in the playing line-up on the ice, can be made unless reviewed and approved by the Referee prior to the start of the game.

7.2 Violation - For an infraction of this rule, a bench minor penalty shall be imposed upon the offending team. This is an appeal play and must be brought to the Referee’s attention prior to the second face-off in the game. There is no penalty to the requesting team if their appeal is unsustained. The determining factor is the player or goalkeeper’s name, and not necessarily the player or goalkeeper’s number, must be correctly listed by the team. In the event a team scores on the first shift of the game, and it is brought to the attention of the Referee by the opposing team that the team that scored did not have the correct starting line-up on the ice, the goal shall be allowed and a bench minor penalty assessed to the offending team for having an improper starting line-up. If the team that scores a goal on the first shift of the game challenges the starting lineup of the opposing team and the opposing team did not have the correct starting line-up, the scoring of the goal would nullify the bench minor penalty and no further penalties would be assessed.

Yes, it is the stupidest thing that they have such pomp and circumstance about the starting lineup.

I would suppose it has to do with the home team having last line change privileges.

Probably has to do with starting the game on time as well. Both teams know who's going to be on the ice for the puck drop, end of story.

They never used to but recently they’ve been doing making a massive thing of announcing the “starting six” on social media and on screens and all in uk hockey. Its stupidity is my small hill to die on.

It literally means nothing. I mean they could be out there for 3 seconds or something if a penalty is called or literally if a coach wanted he could swap a line as soon as the face off is done.

Berube got dinged with this infraction in 2022 as well

Yeah, it looks like visiting team reports to the refs/scorekeeper so home team can see and deploy accordingly. Gives media a bit of time to pull together their graphics for the puck drop as well. Keefe and other coaches occasionally use the starting line-up as some sort of reward or sentimental boost (all-Swede starting 5, milestone nights, etc).

It's an appeal-penalty as well, which shows exactly how much the league cares about it (i.e. not really), but affords some gamesmanship like equipment/uniform infractions.

At some point, maybe a Penguin just passes the puck to Jarry to make that first ‘save’.
