2024-25 Toronto Maple Leafs General Discussion

1 point in 15 games y'all. Let's not get carried away with a scratch in November.
It's not just the scratch. It's the lack of a chance in the top 6. McMann has done nothing to warrant playing with 88 other then size. The kid scores goals. To expect him to produce with Holmberg and other 4th line guys is ridiculous. Everything else in his game is good. He actually has the least amount of turnovers on the team so far this year.

Exactly. It’s great that he’s putting in the effort defending. That’s a good upgrade for him, but if he’s not producing - and, when I’ve watched, he hasn’t really been getting/generating opportunities, either, which he needs to be able to do regardless of his line mates - he’s not providing more value than a potential replacement. Would he be the first on my list to scratch? No. Should we get up in arms over it? Also no.

I agree about giving him a 2nd line shot. That said, not "everything" else in his game is good. Like said, he has 1 point in 15 games. The very guys you're saying are holding him back, have more points than him. Kampf has 3 points(still terrible) and Holmberg has 2 points(also terrible). Lorentz has 3 goals and 1 assist. All need to be better, but if Robertson is going to be this goal scorer that everyone keeps promising(I think it was mentioned somewhere he could possibly be a 30 goal scorer), he better figure out a way to put up more than he's on pace for this season(5 goals over 82 games). Regardless of his linemates. Heck, McMann who you're pushing for Robertson to replace, is on pace for just under 20 goals right now.

I think Robertson will be a 30 goal scorer, just probably not with the Leafs. Unfortunately he doesn't look like a guy who can produce by himself or on a line with plugs - maybe that will come to some degree over time, but right now he really needs to play with talent. I watch him play and he makes great passes, he is quick and works hard, obviously has the great shot. Give him time with good players so he can get his confidence back and start scoring - then you either have a valuable contributor or a useful trade piece.

McMann obviously has many of the same raw skills (he's fast and has a great shot, maybe not such a good playmaker) plus the benefit of size. But he has been very inconsistent this year so far, quite a few nights where he looked uninterested. That's not something I can really say about Robertson - he may be ineffective but he always looks to be giving it his all. McMann was really good the last game, if he can bring that more often he'll be really valuable and will probably reach 20 goals.

I think we need to also keep in mind Nick is just 23 years old, 2nd youngest on the team and has missed a lot of time due to Covid and injuries. Will he ever develop into a legit 20+ goal scorer, who knows but some guys take longer. McMann is 28. Holmberg is 25.
Yes we'd love if he could carry a line but he's never been that player. He's a pure shooter and as Herman has pointed out many many times, has a shot that goalies don't handle well. I would just like to see him with wingers like 88 and 16 for a bit to see what he can do.

At this point I want Matthews on the LTIR for trade deadline cap space. Who gives a F about the regular season? He will miss Saturday which will be 6 of 10 towards the LTIR minimum. Equates to $10M in cap space at deadline time, yes please!

It only makes space available if he's on LTIR at the deadline. You don't accrue unused LTIR space. It's temporary.

I'm not writing him off by any means. But I'm also not shocked that he's been scratched a couple times this year.

Not shocked either but I feel others have been worse. He does need to get some points on the board at the end of the day. I'm hoping he can find his way soon. They need scorers.

What the heck is up with the schedule this year.

We play Wednesday/Sunday this week and Wednesday/Saturday next week so a stretch of 4 games in 14 days.

December the Leafs play 15 games.
- 4 back to backs.
- All four back to backs involve travel
- Play 3 games in 4 nights three times
- Play 4 games in 6 nights three times
- Have a 5PM game on December 15 against Buffalo (play the night before at 7PM)
- Have a 2PM game on December 23 against Winnipeg (the 4th game in 6 nights)
- Have a 1PM game on December 31 against New York

With December being a disaster if Matthews isn't 100% ready to go they should just hold him out until he is because the schedule is going to kill guys who are a bit banged up
