2024 Offseason Thread: Changes

https://x.com/lukefoxjukebox/status/1828433244435456097
a) Nick Robertson sticking with the trade request
b) 32 Thoughts notes that Leafs are poking around LW options

So presuming Robertson does not come to his senses and take his QO to build up trade value / ingratiate his skillset to the coaching staff, a top-9 LW spot is pretty open.

That means one or more of these could happen:
[*] COWAN gets the tryout and maybe it extends in dribs and drabs until the world juniors (or he just cooks and we high five each other).
[*] Alex Nylander is getting an NHL deal whenever Cowan goes back to London
[*] fun fun trade for Cole Perfetti (wow, I doubt it) or Lucas Raymond (probably not) or Dawson Mercer (unlikely)

I mean this was likely what was going to happen. Robertson/Cowan/A. Nylander/possibly a PTO were battling for one spot. Would just mean one less option. I think Robertson is nuts to not try and get into that fight. Worst case he doesn't make it and will likely end up on waivers where he can find a team there probably.

Why not throw in Brady Tkachuk while we're at it!

Because I don't like him!

I would like a mid-6 right handed center and solve the 3LW internally with some kind of Holmberg/whoever.

This is probably coming down the pipeline next offseason, with the cap space coming off the top of the roster.

Damn those Islanders for not buying out Pageau.

I guess it's Willy szn. RH centre that can take faceoffs and PK (offensively) and drive his own line against soft(er) match ups.

Even spread in the top 9 until you need some goals, and then Willy shifts up over Jarnkrok, who in turn takes Reaves' minutes, and the rest of L3 ride pine unless someone is busted.

Domi not even making the lineup sucks for him.

600+ games in the NHL; basically all at right wing. Can't we just leave him there?

We could and we probably will, but I think the first chunk of the season is a good time to find out if it could work. Treliving clearly wants a more solid 3-line attack; Berube likes to roll his lines. A two-way centre is expensive on the market and unlikely to provide anywhere near the offense Nylander can drive near solo, and our in-house option is not quite ready yet.

Nylander has played centre previously prior to the NHL and generally handled a lot of the centre duties already when playing with Tavares. We've needed a plan for Tavares' decline for years and this is a really good chance to bridge the gap* for a sunk cost.

* Hello, Connor McDavid.

On a min-deal it's worth a gamble I guess but he'll be 36 and tore his achilles twice.  Can he even skate?

He had 4 goals in 47 games after coming back to play for Washington last year.

I'll wait to see if it actually happens before getting any deeper but generally speaking on the right contract (under $1mil but preferably just league minimum) I think it'd be fine. Particularly if Robertson doesn't re-sign. And I'd assume if something like this happens it signals he's probably a goner.

Looking into the list of available LW/Cs left on the market... okay I get it. JvR? Tyler Johnson?

Didn't realize TJ was that old, but I'd definitely take him. Good 3C option?

eh... if extremely desperate? not much offense even with a lot of opportunity with the Chicago's roster (or maybe he didn't have much to work with?), not all that sturdy defensively, and he's smaller and way older than Nick Robertson. Might as well stick with Domi at 3C at that point.
