Armchair GM 2018-2019

Schenn played a "heavy" and "bigger" then Rielly. Unfortunately he didn't have the foot speed or skill to keep up with the changing game.
I still remember JVR blowing around him like he was a pylon and scoring a goal not to long after the trade.
Poor Luke, poor us, there were some other Gems that we could have had.

It was unfortunate for Schenn that the hooking and grabbing era became extinct when soon after he entered the league.

The Leafs really do have a lot of contracts to negotiate in the coming 6 months:

He still managed to play 11 seasons and make over 20 million dollars.

Does Kapanen get a similar deal to Hyman (with a little boost)? Something like 3 years at $2.6M?

Or is that wishful thinking?

If his production keeps up near its current pace, probably wishful thinking. Not likely to be able to get a guy who could be coming off a 20g, 50p season to sign a multi-year contract at that low a rate.

Which is excellent considering his skillset. I always liked him. Handled himself well and even tho the game changed, I thought he could still be useful as a 5/6 guy who could kill penalties. Not now, mind you.

I don't cry for Luke Argentina 8)

Someone I've been interested in awhile is Sami Vatanen. He's got one more year at $4.9M after this year, he's mobile, youngish (27), and he's a right-hand shot. NJ didn't exactly give up a lot to get him. Gardiner and Hainsey are both off the books this year, barring a re-signing.

Vatanen could make up for most of Gardiner's offense and give us more depth on the right side. It's not a huge cap hit and gives them time to figure out what to do for 2020. If we could rid ourselves of Zaitsev, then I'd advocate for keeping both Gardiner and Vatanen.

I doubt Brown + gets us Vatanen, but I suppose it depends on what the plus is. I mean, really, NJ's going to throw in the towel early, right?

Gardiner and his potential cap hit, have to go. It's the JVR scenario again. He's one dimensional. He's not overly good defensively and won't be worth the 6+ million he's going to be getting. I say the Leafs go after Parayko for a long term solution. It will cost them probably a 1st rounder+, but it might be worth it.

Parayko probably costs Kapanen+Liljegren/Sandin+1st.

Yeah, and as much as St Louis is open for business, I have my doubts Parayko is even available. He might be the one 'veteran' player on the roster who is off limits. At the very least, they're likely to put a price on him that basically takes him off the market.

I know it would cost a lot. I would want to keep Kappy and Sandin so I'd dangle Johnsson+Lily and a 1st. Throw in Brown if they wanted. Don't know if that would do it. Hell, don't even know if St Louis would trade him. Probably not.

So you want Parayko but don't want to give up any of the pieces St. Louis would probably want for him.

Pretty clear even for you.

"As I was lying in the puddle I think I may have figured out a way to get Bonds and Griffey and we wouldn't even have to give up that much."

Liljegren, 1st, Johnsson, + (Durzi? Moore?) would probably get it done, but then again, Taylor Hall was traded for Adam Larsson so what the heck do I know..

I think that any question of what a team might do should allow for a lot of possibilities but I think it's probably a mistake to look at a situation like this and think that if a team would want a young forward and a defense prospect that they'd be satisfied with the guys we think are most expendable.

Parayko is 25 and under contract for three more seasons at a very reasonable rate. Even if they're scrapping things down, they don't necessarily need to move him and if they do want to there'd probably be a ton of interest. With the premium on good young defensemen that's evidenced by the Hall-Larsson deal I think any realistic trade for someone like Parayko would be one that fans of both teams would have to think hard about.

So, Vatanen: yes/no?  8) costs a lot less than Parayko.

He's fine but not really the kind of defenceman that we need. I also wouldn't want both him and Zaitsev taking up almost $10mil of the cap.
