Armchair GM 2018-2019

For a rental and of course based on cost, I wouldn't mind a Kronwall/Methot type D man and a Wayne Simmons up front. If the cost is too high you obviously pass.

Realistically, his teammate Bouwmeester would be a massive upgrade on Hainsey.

Not so sure that's true actually with the season Bouwmeester is having right now.

Just a bit of a follow-up to this:

So anyone have any interest in Ben Lovejoy? 34yo, RHD, pretty decent Corsi (much better ratio than Hainsey/Zaitsev) and, if so, any idea of the cost? Mid-range pick + mid-range prospect enough to get it done?

Muzzin- Rielly
Gardiner- Lovejoy
Dermott- Hainsey

Then, if we're feeling particularly adventurous, perhaps we can make a call to Edmonton and free them of Lucic, minus a 1.5-2 million dollar retention, for Zaitsev. I'd be fine with 4 more years of Lucic @ 4 million if it relieves us of 5 years of Zaitsev @ 4.5 mill. Am I crazy here?

You are crazy on Lucic,  he just can't play. I would rather keep Zaitsev at full price than take Lucic at half price.

Ah, I haven't seen an Edmonton game in awhile, I don't know how bad he's looked, hence the "am I crazy" bit  ;)

I just figured that at only 30 years old he'd still be somewhat passable in a bottom 6 role on a heavily offensive team.

Yeah I'm all for dumping Zaitsev but not at the expense of a $4M Lucic. He's actually league minimum quality now

I honestly don't think Lucic could make the Leaf's lineup.

My line of thinking was simply that Zaitsev is basically a #7 quality d-man at 4.5 million for 5 more years so you might get slightly more value than that with Lucic on the 4th line at 500K less per year for one less year of commitment. It's certainly not an avenue I'd like to especially pursue but I don't think anyone is taking that Zaitsev contract off our hands unless it's a deal similar to this one.

I think the way out of Zaitsev, if the Leaf's want it, is to pair him with one of our decent wingers that we might not be able to afford Cap wise. Trade both hopefully for a D that we can use. To follow the media, something like Zaitsev and Kapanen for Pesce. No idea if either team would do this deal??

Yea that might be the way they end up going. I think Carolina was asking for Kapanen + for Pesce alone though so I'm not sure what it would take.

The plus is Zaitsev!!! Wait that might be a minus?? I woukd be talking to Kapanen's agent right now and if he wants bigger money selling high might be my move.

Well Zaitsev is a minus and his contract is a minus. Don't two minuses make a plus? I think we just cracked this thing!

I think we'll see a cheaper lower $ bridge for Kapanen with the hope for something more lucrative once we have more Cap versatility in a few years.

if Babcock loses faith in Sparks....do they bring Hutchinson back or make a deal to bring a goalie in ?

If Freddie goes down for an extended period, the team is screwed so it won't matter who you bring in as a backup.

This is true for a good number of teams in the league. Perhaps not to the extent of Toronto but there's not too many Richter/Vanbiesbrouck combos out there.

I personally like Sparks better than Hutchinson.

Gardiner not on the ice at practice... obviously gonezo! I don't actually believe that but why isn't he at practice? Is he hurt?

I mean he had back spasms just what 10 days ago or so?  Those can act up at any time.
