Bernier traded to Anaheim

That sort of depends on what value the Leafs actually got though. If it's roughly similar to what they got for Reimer last year, sure. If it's less, then I think that keeping Bernier around in the event Andersen does poorly or even just only starts 35-45 pre-deadline games(which seems fairly likely regardless) then 20-25 good pre-deadline starts by Bernier could make him a slightly more valuable commodity at the deadline.

Sure, but, it's not exactly the same trade now is it would be then. In addition to whatever asset the Leafs got for Bernier, they also received the full $4.15M in cap space (minus whatever a backup goalie ends up costing), whereas, at the deadline, they'd only get the pro-rated value of that. Moving that cap value could be enough for them to avoid carry-over issues next season (depending on the Cowen situation). Trading him now potentially saves them ~$2M against the cap in 17/18. To me, that's more than enough to make up the difference between the pick they got now and what they might have been able to get at the deadline.

I really don't know that even if he performed well there would be much of a market for him at the deadline to get a much better return.  There aren't a whole lot of goaltending vacancies right now and I don't see that changing significantly by the deadline.

I don't either. I mean, really, we're talking about moving from possibly a 5th round pick to a 4th round pick. Unless he were to play so well that he'd retake the starting role from Andersen (rather than Andersen losing the starting role due to poor play) and a contending team lost their starter to injury, the room for his value to grow is basically limited to a slightly better mid-round pick.

Still no word on the conditions for the draft pick but a Ducks beat reporter wrote that he heard they're "fairly complicated".

Looks pretty basic to me.

If Goalie = 'Bernier' and GoalDistance > '190' Then
  PickRound = NULL
Else
  PickRound = 5
End If

I really don't care what the return ends up being for Bernier.  I'm just happy that the constant bickering between the Reimer and Bernier fan clubs is over!  ;D

I wonder if Bernier will get a five year contract at the end of this season...  :o :D :P

Somewhere in Europe???

http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/breaking-conditional-pick-leafs-bernier-trade/

The details of the conditional pick weren?t disclosed by either team when the transaction was completed. They are:

? If Bernier starts half of Anaheim?s playoff games next spring and the Ducks win the Stanley Cup, Toronto receives the Ducks? 2017 second-round pick. (If Anaheim doesn?t still own that selection, it will transfer its next available second-rounder from a future year.)

? If Bernier starts half of Anaheim?s playoff games next spring and the Ducks lose in the Stanley Cup Final, Toronto receives the Ducks? 2017 third-round pick. (If Anaheim doesn?t still own that selection, it will transfer its next available third-rounder from a future year.)

? Should Anaheim trade Bernier to a team that starts him in half of its playoff games next spring and wins the Stanley Cup, Toronto receives the Ducks? second-round pick.

? Should Anaheim trade Bernier to a team that starts him in half of its playoff games next spring and loses in the Stanley Cup Final, Toronto receives the Ducks? third-round pick.

If none of those things happen, the Leafs will receive no tangible return for Bernier beyond the useful cap space the move created.

Complicated? or Impossible?

So pretty safe to say nothing.

We really need a clever acronym for #DubasGMAugust2016. DGMA doesn't really cut it.

They may as well have made one of the conditions dependent on whether or not Bernier could point out South Africa on a map. About as plausible as the actual ones.

I suppose when you consider it to be part of the Andersen trade (I think the Leafs said as much), it's easier to comprehend. Still, I'm wondering if the picks were worth it. .  Guses it'll be a few years before we know.

Buried in that article are also the conditions of the 2nd round pick we dealt to Anaheim in the initial Andersen deal:

(Toronto currently owns three second-round picks next year ? their own, plus one from Ottawa and one from San Jose. Whichever pick ends up being the middle of the three will be transferred to the Ducks in the Andersen deal.)

Not sure what would happen if one of those three picks were dealt though of course.

The Leafs get a 1st if Bernier is made visiting chair of political science at the University of the Witwatersrand.

APSA is at the end of August.  I might be able to pull some strings. :P
