He's played a lot of really, really good hockey through most of the year, but the lack of effort at times of late is disconcerting. Maybe a bit of load management wouldn't be the worst idea.
I think Nylander self-manages his load, which is to say, he doesn't go full bore over the whole season. Which is fine when you are as skilled as he is. The concern is whether he can turn on the spigot when the post-season comes around.
Not missing anything, you're right. Matthew and Marner lead the Leafs in the playoffs this era in raw points and TOI (and $$$$$). Nylander is right there with them in the same level of production, playing 100 fewer minutes and other than year 1-3 with Matthews, he has otherwise been working with the likes of Marleau, Johnsson, Kerfoot, Engvall, Kampf, Galchenyuk, Mikheyev, and Tavares. Nylander led the Leafs in playoff goals for the past 3 seasons. The three seasons prior, Matthews led the team in playoff scoring (guess who was on his wing).
I think it's fair to say he ramps up more than fine in the playoffs for his role.
On the Samsonov thing. Have we actually seen any evidence of Russia doing anything to the Russians participating in Pride stuff. I haven't seen any evidence of it from guys like Zahorna or Bobrovsky participating.
