Brad Treliving is new Leafs GM

Maple Tree-Living. For now at least. Let?s see how this all unfolds over the summer ? and how many Leafs have dropped come the fall.

So excited to bring in the guy who gave Kadri a ridiculous contract, lost their young superstar for ?reasons? and bungled signing their longtime star UFA player.

I?m really starting to think Shanahan may be a bit of a lunkhead.

I?m going to say having to stay in Calgary was the biggest factor for those moves. Gaudreau wanted to be closer to home and Tkachuk wanted to be not in Calgary. After that, Kadri was the best available UFA that could plug the holes left by those two wanting to not be in Cowtown. I don?t put too much on Treliving there.

Losing Dubas but keeping Keefe would be... a choice.

After the playoffs, my thought was they should let go of both Keefe and Shannahan and keep/promote Dubas.  It's weird to see them go with the exact opposite...

*Or, pure speculation on my part, did they hate playing for the coach the GM picked to coach the team?

As in, the worst possible one.  I was happy to kind of side a bit with Shanahan in this thing with Dubas, but if he thinks Keefe is the one who can stay, he just turned me into a charter member of PAS.

I guess we'll see what Treliving thinks.  Ugh.

This could quickly go from Treliving to Tredying.

For whatever it's worth, most reports seem to say it was Calgary ownership that hired (and then extended) Sutter over Treliving's head.

Not fond at all of Keefe being kept, but the new GM usually likes to keep that one bullet for later on, so I guess we have to live with it.  I was looking forward to a good purging in the organization from top down -- from GM, coach, and even a core forward or two.

Yeah. I'm sure Sutter had an influence, but it definitely felt like he was forced on Treliving rather than chosen by him.

And, as messy as the ownership situation is here, I can't envision that happening.

Furthermore Friedman wrote that it's believed a big reason Treliving left the Flames was because of his "deteriorating relationship with Sutter". At the time Sutter still had 2 years left on his contract and it seemed like ownership was standing with him. He was fired a couple weeks later, almost certainly once the trade requests from players became too much to ignore.

Interesting if true... would definitely change my opinion on a few things. I didn't see "Calgary" as the reason two star players left, I really thought it was Sutter.

I won't go as far as to say they were anti-Canada or anti-Calgary, but I think it was also pretty clear they both wanted to play in the States. Tkachuk's reported list of teams he would sign long-term deals with if Calgary dealt him there were: Florida, Nashville, Dallas, Vegas, and St. Louis. Gaudreau obviously had his sights set on Columbus, New Jersey, or Philly.

I?m pretty sure Tkachuk had said he would have signed long term but the team would only offer him a bridge contract.

I?m telling you this guy is going to come in and make a terrible trade for nylander and somehow mess up the Matthews negotiation.

No one is perfect, but this whole Dubas thing is stupid. I feel this team is going to regress to Burke level mismanagement.

They are both American, so that definitely had some influence. I don't know if it was specifically an anti-Calgary stance, but Calgary was definitely further away from where they wanted to be than a lot of other NHL cities.

If Gaudreau had been a Leaf the whole time, I suspect he would have felt he was close enough to his family that it wouldn't have been the same issue. With Tkachuk, I'm not sure - though, being close to his brother and being on opposite sides of that rivalry also might have swayed his mind.

He was dealt because he specifically said he wouldn't sign a long-term deal in Calgary.

If you you look at what Treliving just dealt with in Calgary, star players on expiring deals, and if you evaluate how he dealt with that, I'd say he'd not be the one you'd want dealing with, checks notes, Matthews and Nylander on expiring deals.

I dunno, maybe he learned from his mistakes. 🤷

As long as Pridham is still running the cap calcs, it should mitigate a lot of the concerns about Treliving?s contract signings.
