Brendan Shanahan to be named president of Maple Leafs

we had a decent European scout at one time. It was either Thommie Bergman or Anders Hedberg that did a decent job..Not sure if either is still there

I think the amateur scouting staff have done a fine job. I wouldn't touch them. The pro scouting has been average, other than a few hits here and there. If there is a opportunity to upgrade that, I'd be all over it!

The amateur scouts have been adequate, but, they could still use some upgrades. That's the area where the Leafs could really be using some of their financial advantage. Have multiple scouts in each territory, so they get multiple opinions on players and more time watching each player. More in-depth scouting reports certainly couldn't hurt.

The amateur scouting hasn't been good.  The only players that we have drafted and made the leafs, during the fletcher/burke era were top ten picks.  We need much better drafting and hence scouts.

I think Bergmann is still with the team, and I'm not suggesting replacing him or anything like that. I just think they need to build up the scouting staff on the other side of the pond.

Bergman's still here. He's probably responsible for a lot of the Swedish picks the team has had in recent years (Johnson, Nilsson, Granberg). And of course Stalberg, Gunnarsson, and Steen if we look further back. There have been some misses, but generally the team has done well out of Sweden.

Later round picks generally take more time to reach the NHL. We've started to see some of them take that step over the last season or two, which is roughly in line with when he should really be expecting these guys. They may not have plucked any gems from the late rounds, but, there certainly appear to be some NHL calibre players taken.

IIRC correctly Hedberg uncovered some pretty good players but is now gone - not sure how - whether it was Quinn or JFJ's reign that lost or fired him.

Personally I'd approach the Wings European scout team and place an open chequebook on the counter and point at it.

I don't know the tampering issue but I'm sure the Leafs would get penalized somehow anyway.

Bergmann is a very good scout. You look at the Leafs' success rate for drafting Euros, specifically Swedes, and it's typically been quite high.

Where the Leafs messed up was when they moved away from drafting Euros, which they were quite successful at, and focused on drafting these big, tough, North Americans.

You look at both the 2008 and 2009 drafts, which were really critical draft years for the Leafs, and the Leafs did not perform nearly as well as they could have. Yes, there's still a D'Amigo or MacWilliam that are doing well, but still.

Thankfully it seems that they've returned to diversifying their drafting strategy.

Good get rid of Poulin, Fletcher, Loiselle, Steve Kasper, Bobby Carpenter, Dave Morrison and all of those cronies. New regime.. Bring in Shanny  do something

Poulin & Loiselle for sure need to go. Spent way too much time all year in the media defending the status quo / Carlyle. They are part of a train of thought that has been obsolete since 2004.

Cox says it's a done deal? So, it's not happening, then.

Want to bet it does?

He has wacky opinions as a columnist at times, but I've found his reporting to be quite responsible.

That was a joke, but, I do have my doubts about it happening along the time line he's laying out.

Speaking of Cox, it's been revealed that he's moving to Sportsnet full time. I was afraid that was going to happen. Wonder if he becomes the new official Leafs mouthpiece. His new bosses probably didn't want TSN getting this story first.

As reported by @TorontoStar, can confirm Brendan Shanahan finalizing arrangements to leave NHL to take executive pos'n with Maple Leafs.

That's what I was waiting for.

The timing is a little bit obvious, no? But I guess providing a distraction for toronto media on a bad team performance is what a good executive does.

To be honest, and I'm probably alone, but I was a fan of Burke. You know the hockey decisions began and ended with him.

Adding layer upon layer of management doesn't accomplish much but make meetings longer.
