Shanny: "The best kind of pressure is peer pressure."

Without naming names or pointing fingers or telling absolute stories, are you starting to sense yourself that there is a greater interest among players in playing for the Toronto Maple Leafs than two years ago?

Shanahan: I?ll tell you a story I told someone earlier today. A couple of years back, we were in the running for a free agent. I was driving my son to school and he was 12 at the time. I said, ?He chose another team over us.? This was one of the top teams in the NHL. My son ? 12 year olds can sometimes be so blunt ? said, ?Well, do you blame him?? We didn?t, at the time, have Mike Babcock or Lou Lamoriello. We ourselves were in our infancy stage. The answer is yes, having good players and having a better environment certainly makes it a safer, more attractive place for other players.

Not if his play meant we didn't finish last in 2015-16.

Ahh, yes. The silver lining. That story is a neat little glimpse inside the business. The rich can get richer once a team gets over the hump and has a chance to win on a regular basis.

Is your team looking to rebuild through the draft, but your players are too talented to tank?

Have I got the solution for you!

It's insane how many little things need to go right for a team to acquire an elite talent, especially when it comes to the draft. One little change here or there and a team can draft a spot up or down or a player can fall to a team by one spot. There were a number of those in our tank year (if JVR doesnt get hurt in the 2nd half, or if Kadri didn't forget how to score in the 1st half, we probably don't have Matthews). Now we can add this one too. Even without Kane Panarin's an elite talent who probably would have been the teams best player that year. He wouldn't have scored 77 points, but I'd bet he'd have led our team in scoring for sure.

So thank you Panarin. Thank-you for signing in Chicago instead of Toronto. 1) You inadvertently helped us get Matthews, and 2) you inadvertently kept him away from the Oilers who would have finished last if we didn't.

Wowzers! Seriously though it's nice to know our management was sniffing around that potential. I guess everything worked out in the end. Would he of scored that many points on TOR, probably not? I would say he made a pretty good decision.

During the FAN590 interview that I listen to, he discussed that he choose to take less money to be a part of winning culture and other Red Wings did as well and he implied he would like the Leaf players to do the same... would love to see it but that all mighty $ are hard to pass up. I don't know how realistic this train of thought is?

Take less and win cups and become a hockey God! Do it!
