Apart from the age difference, completely different style of play, and the fact that Gardiner is coming off a few strong seasons and brings a skill to the team that it sorely lacks (the ability to carry the puck), I completely agree with you.

A few strong seasons? The only thing he's shown is fleeting potential. Not anything approaching a "strong season". Nonsense.

The thing that bugs me there, and I've mentioned it before, is that it wasn't a failure of ability. He just gave up on the play or, and this is the charitable reading of things, he just forgot about covering his man.
That's the kind of thing I just think the team's captain can't do. Miss checks, sure, get beat to the outside, whatever...but to look like you don't care?
