So as a capped out team performing this way, either the GM assembled a bunch of stiffs and needs to be fired or the team are not buying what the 3 line coach is selling.

One of the two needs to be fired and personally I'd like to see what Bylsma could do with this group before firing Nonis.

I'm not sure how much of the Pens success could be attributed to Bylsma's coaching. I wouldn't want to go down that road, like all the GMs with "coach wanted" signs in the offseason.

I don't think this is an isolated issue right now.

If they wait to the off season to make changes I'd agree with you. Midseason though I'd give Nonis a chance to hire a coach as a last throw of the dice.

But then say the team still does poorly because Nonis assembled a bad roster and he has to get fired in the offseason. Then the new GM is inheriting a coach and typically that's not a great idea (although in this case if we're talking about Bysma he's inheriting a pretty good one).

LOL @ the guy who was flipping two birds near the entrance/exit of the Leafs. Those are bloody expensive seats! Poor dude.

Shanahan deserves plenty of skepticism, too.  Why he let Nonis re-up Carlyle is beyond understanding.

Nonis obviously vouched for Carlyle this offseason. I just don't see how you could possibly fire one without the other at this point.

Well, it depends on what, if anything, Nonis is really doing for the Leafs these days. Fire Carlyle or not, I don't for a second believe Nonis will be making the decision on who the next coach is.

Shanahan came into an organization that he had no ties or familiarity with. I can't really blame him for not coming in and firing everybody right off that bat using just second-hand information.

Good thing Chara is out. Pathetic to say the least. Nevermind Staal or anyone else. Get rid of Phaneuf, Clarkson and do this rebuild properly. Get in the McDavid sweepstakes.

I'd say the biggest problem isn't the goaltending or the lack of 4th line minutes.

Basically the 2nd line is useless, the defense has only 2 players with anything approaching grit, and the first line can only play effectively away from the boards.

Of course, but he could have nixed an extension for Carlyle and told Nonis to find someone else.  Giving RC a 2-year deal after an incompetent season was just asinine.

Personally I really hope the Leafs aren't just banking on Babcock.  I mean he's a good coach and everything, but he's won 1 Stanley Cup and even though Detroit isn't the power-house roster that they used to have, they still have some of the better players in the game in and out of their lineup.  Expecting him to continue to not sign an extension AND then choose the Leafs over any other team is a big assumption.

If they wait until the end of the year I think you need to give the new coach some kind of assessment with what the core of this team is before giving up on it too.  I'm tired of watching Carlyle's approach.

Nah. You have to give him an extension if you're planning on keeping him around. Unless the extension represents money that prohibits you from firing him, why even bother giving your coach that public a vote of non-confidence? Then it just looks like you're dragging your heels.

And the extension represents how the franchise does business. You don't attract top candidates by nickle and diming your current ones. The extension is a severance package, not an assurance of employment.

Not understanding your point.  The obvious thing to do was just let him go.  And in this case, the obvious thing was also the right thing.

Im of the opinion that games like these are a good thing.

The more bombs they have like this, the faster the brass will conclude that they need to completely blow up this team and start over from scratch. At least then we can look forward again.

This team is like a half finished house with the basement sinking into a swamp.

Its never going to go anywhere good, reboot is needed. I felt it obvious after the 2nd epic fail collapse. Or maybe the third.

I'd probably prefer Byslma to Babcock, but they're both great coaches in my opinion. If the Leafs really are waiting for Babcock though they must have some sort of little birdy whispering in his ears. And if the rumours of him wanting more control in the hockey ops aspect of things like Roy, then Toronto really makes perfect sense as if there's an opening in the head coach position there will almost certainly be a vacancy at GM too.

Fire Nonis/Carlyle, promote Dubas to GM (which considering Shanahan's position in the organization is really more like AGM), and bring in Babcock as head coach and to fill Dubas' old position.

Should we be afraid that we play Buffalo next? Clarkson should sit that game. He is cursed with Buffalo.
