Canadiens vs. Maple Leafs - Oct. 9th, 7:00pm - SN, Fan 590

Over 200 games without being shutout, 1st Berube game, it's over...lol
Good effort, deserved better. Don't know why Robertson is sitting with the goalie out but whatever.
Stolarz very good.

I know it's only the first game but hate being shutout by a garbage ass team. Watch the Habs get pumped tomorrow in Boston

Florida made them look very silly the other night.
NYR dummied the Pens. WPG is killing EDM. At least the Leafs played a good game.

Personally I thought Marner galaxy brained everything all game. Team looked meh. Tanev looks reliable and I really like how slick OEL looks (besides the breakaway). Stolarz is such a breath of fresh air.

You know, I thought Marner overall looked quite good and had some wonderful plays both sides of the ice but there were 3 or 4 big momentum-killing "galaxy brained" plays that sucked the life out of me lol.

Thought the 4th line played quite well and was impressed by Holmberg's effort. Other than him, Nylander and Marner, didn't feel like any other forward stood out. I HATE Domi on Tavares' wing. Domi at C or on Matthew's RW, otherwise he almost is useless.

Last night Marner overthought everything on the offensive side of the puck and it wasn't clicking. I just don't think globe trotter hockey is transferable to the playoffs. I wish he would simplify things a bit.

Domi with two shooters sounds like a decent concept but it was ugly. The top 3 lines could use a shuffle.

Robbie looked largely ineffective last night. Love his shot when he's able to get it through, but far too easily manhandled.

That's his obstacle to becoming a really effective NHLer.  Not sure he'll ever get past it.

Good to see the Leafs started off the season in playoff mode, complete with a non-functioning power play, a total inability to shoot the puck into an ocean, and of course an injured Joseph Woll.

I'm going to try to be non-critical for the most part - figured I'd give the team at least 10 games to settle in with a new coach/system and all the personnel changes. I am concerned with the fact that even with a brand new head coach, he's resorted to basically the same top two lines as last year. What happened to the Nylander/center experiment. That second line doesn't seem to be built for success. I just don't get why Marner and Matthews are always stapled together and why no one can figure out a way to spread the offensive talent out over 3 lines. Domi and Matthews worked well last year and Tavares+Marner usually looks good. I'd like to see some creative thinking with this forward group. We'll see.

On the plus side, Stolarz looked great in pre-season and last night. Hildeby looked really solid in preseason. I thought Tanev looked good and OEL for the most part. Not so sure about Timmins. Lorentz looks OK. Thought Pacioretty looked pretty solid last night. Robertson struggled a bit.

Tonight will be interesting against a rested and much better opponent.

100%. I was pissed off when I saw the lines for opening night.

Do these lines:

Domi - Matthews - Robertson
Knies - Nylander - Marner
Pacioretty - Tavares - McMann
Lorentz - Kampf -  Reaves

Domi is the best passer on the team. Put him with the 2 best shooters on the team. Matthews consumes so much attention from the opposite team, but you hav to respect Robertson's shot. Matthews is one of the best defensive forwards in the league. He can prop us any deficiencies his wingers might have.

Line two is balanced. Marner can help offset any deficiencies/learning curve Nylander has at C. Heck, you can let Marner handle defensive duties in the d-zone.

Solid third line with two responsible defensive forward.

I like the 4th line and what they bring.

At least 2 NHL coaches don't think Nylander at C works:

Domi Matthews Knies
McMann Tavares Nylander
Pacioretty Holmberg Marner
Robertson Kampf Lorentz

He?s the kind of player who would absolutely rip up a top European league like Sweden or Finland etc.
