Carlyle: A team without goals is like a ship without a rudder

Except I'm asking specifically. Did he miss practices? Refuse to take part in drills? Did he miss team flights? Did he set-up a farm-to-table pop-up serving authentic Wisconsin cuisine in between periods?

He was first off the ice.  :-\

After every goal.

Moving Kessel out had an equalizing effect that made sure there wasn't any backwards power dynamic in the dressing room.

I still don't know what that means.

Allow me to clarify: I meant there'd be no one subverting the coaching staff's authority.

This Lou Lamoriello "Everyone has to be exactly the same" stuff doesn't really strike me as smart personnel management.

I never made this connection before, and it's really complete speculation, but the Devils did have a pretty hard time retaining their star talent. Gomez, Niedermayer, Parise, Kovalchuk, all bolted.

Other than Kovalchuk, I feel like the rest left largely because of money. Even Kovalchuk may have because he knew he'd earn more in Russia than his contract called for.

I think Parise more left because he wanted to be closer to home and Niedermayer because he wanted to play with his brother but none of those decisions took place in a vacuum. They all start with "well, ok, I'm pretty sure I don't want to stay here".

You know who blames their employees when they can't control the organization...a bad manager.  Carlyle was a crap coach and this woe is me stuff is annoying.

Longest year ever, from a Leaf fan prospective. We were actually in a playoff position at this time last year. What a horrid run that followed ending the season at an all time low. Not a fan or player gave a crap by the end of last season. We hit the absolute bottom. We went to rehab this summer, got our shit together and have a committed to a solid recovery plan. I for one am grateful for the new approach to the management of the teams hockey assets.

Man, I didn't realize it was this low but the Leafs' CF (basically their possession #'s) was 44% from the day Carlyle was hired to the day he was fired.  Only Buffalo was worse over that time.

I think if anything, Babcock is showing that a coach can implement structure to a team fairly quickly and that's something I don't think I ever saw with Carlyle in the 188 regular season games he had as coach.

Babcock seems to be the better coach.  I do think he's had a rather big advantage in the dressing room over carlyle in that by paying babcock as much as they did and the whole fan fare surrounding bringing him in.  It made it pretty obvious that players would be leaving before the coach would be.  I think over the short term that makes him a lot harder to tune out.

I think the general setting of the rebuild has made things simpler as well.  The general feeling around the team seems to be one of less turmoil.  Last year, whether it was Kessel blowing up in the media every couple months, or the constant talk of how the team was just a bad team, things seemed to be all gloom and doom.  The general feeling this year seems to be more upbeat.
