Well, yes and no. Cherry did also say the stupid thing about the Leafs being a team that cheers when Canada loses.

If the Leafs had Ottawa's roster and were losing, convince me that xenophobe wouldn't be whining about the lack of Canadians.
If the Leafs had too many from the QMJHL or not enough from the WHL, he'd whine about that too.
For me as a Canadian, Cherry expressing that sort of garbage on HNIC (with plenty of non Canadians watching) is embarrassing. There are too many top American or Euro hockey players in the league to be carrying on with that crap. I think Don needs to go. I've heard enough of that ignorant crap.

There are so many other sports channel options now to carry games that there's no guarantee CBC gets the broadcast rights when they're up for renewal. I'm sure Cherry's comments would make more than 1 NHL executive unhappy.

If they were winning at Ottawa's clip, I don't think you'd hear much either.
Cherry aside, is there anything wrong with wanting to cheer for local players?

I genuinely doubt that Cherry will have anything to do with it. The NHL rights are going to go to who pays the most for them and I don't think there's much else that factors into the equation.
Zee said:Sure but if other networks bid the same as the CBC, it comes down to a decision by the NHL on who to pick. Unless the CBC severely outbids other networks (which I doubt), there's no guarantee they'd get the rights. Cherry and his remarks wouldn't help their cause if it came down to a judgement call between 2 or 3 networks.
cw said:Absolutely not as long as it doesn't come at the expense of non local players. And I'm born & raised in Ontario.
Cherry's remarks imply non Ontario hockey players are not as good. If you objectively go through the Ontario hockey players on the Canadian teams, they're not that key to each team's success if we're truly honest about it.

Since I prefer cheering for local players, I guess that would come at the expense of non-local players since I have a limited amount of cheer.
I don't think there is anything wrong with that.

Further to this, the following are top 6, top 4 players from Ontario playing on Canadian teams:
Jason Spezza
Mike Cammalleri
Mark Giordano
P.K. Subban
Kevin Bieksa
I didn't see any top goalies from Ontario playing for a Canadian team.
Nice players but only five out of six Canadian teams. It's not like Ontario players are having a dramatic effect on the fortunes of their respective clubs when there's less than one per team.

Being a proud Canadian, I always cheer for Canada, etc.
Being a hockey fan, I do sincerely admire players from other countries who can play the game. Mats Sundin & Borje Salming to name a couple of great Leafs. Statements like what Cherry makes strike me as so insulting to non Canadians and reflect badly on Canada.
The Summit Series in '72 was arguably the greatest Canadian victory and I was in the streets celebrating with everyone else. But a key part of what made it great was finding out how good the Russians really were. It would have been a forgettable series if Canada had swept them 8-0. By now, non Canadian hockey players should have earned our respect.
In Don Cherry's case, that will never really happen no matter what he says because deep down, he's a bigot. I'd be sorry for the CBC to lose HNIC. It's been there all my life. But if the CBC can't find someone to put a cork on that trash, they should give it to someone who can. I'm fed up.

I cheer for Leafs, regardless of if they've local players or come from another dimension. The only time the national part of me comes into play is of course international tournaments where I want Canada to win.
