Timmy may be traded. He is our best chip without giving up the 1st, Mintin, Cowan, Neimala etc.
I love the guy but Keefe is not sold. And Athletic keeps saying its is time for them to make a decision.

After the trouble they have been going through to land a RH D last summer and this deadline, and after how well he filled in for Rielly during his suspension, I would be shocked. It would have to be one heck of a deal. Developing dmen takes time, he's just starting to hit that window when young dmen start to get good at age 24. He's a RFA so they have some contract control. I think he's worth more than any of these "1st, Mintin, Cowan, Neimala". They have a window to win with Matthews et al. He can help now and every year going forward. Those others can't.

This is perhaps neither here nor there but Minten seems vastly overrated by our fan base.  I barely pay attention but he just doesn?t appear to score enough to be anything more than a replacement-level player.  Am I wrong?  Right now, it looks like he is barely scoring over a point per game in junior a year after his draft. Shouldn?t he be scoring at 1.5-2points per game to be considered a viable 2nd line player in the long run?

And if he?s not there then can?t he be replaced by a random nobody?

Cowan on the other hand is scoring at that 2ppg level in junior and hence seems viable?

I know points aren?t everything ? but low ppg seems like a negative indicator ? as in if you don?t score enough in junior you?ll never be able to win your minutes in the nhl.

There have been a number of studies to project various league scoring results to what one might expect in the NHL. It varies over time as scoring in the leagues goes up and down. KHL or AHL scoring isn't as big a leap as CHL for example, etc. It also hinges on what age the player is in his development. Their ppg typically climbs substantially from their early CHL years until their last season.

If you are a forward scoring 1 ppg in the CHL at Minten's age - as Minten roughly is over his career, that projects to scoring at a considerably lower rate in the NHL. (seemingly a statement of the obvious). I would not describe it as 'low'. Mitch Marner was about 1.67ppg over his OHL career.

If it were really reliable and precise, they wouldn't need scouts. But they need scouts.

PPG is a consideration when looking at Minton and I'm sure it was included in projecting him as high as a 2.5 center that I've seen - between 2nd & 3rd line. His smarts and highly regarded defensive ability don't show up in those ppg stats. Also his entry level deal provides a better price performance for the cap. Being named Captain of WJC Team Canada is worthy of some recognition.

I think he has enhanced value. They would probably have to spend $1+M more per season to get as good a 3rd line center in a yr+. And he can help when Matthews-Marner-Nylander are trying to win it all. He may need a year in the AHL ... We'll see. To me that is worth more than a 1st rounder.

Cowan is harder to pin down. He took off in that last year. Looks like he can score at a top 6 clip. I don't know how he'll do against bigger, stronger players. His PKing is a big plus. I also think he's worth more than a 1st rounder now.

When I'm equating 'more than a 1st rounder', I'm not thinking about what another team would pay for him. I'm thinking about what a 1st rounder would do for the Leafs during Matthews-Marner-Nylander years trying to go for it. A 2026 first rounder may not be NHL ready before Matthews deal expires.
