Clarkson seems like the type of guy who can collect alot of the "garbage" type goals in front of the net like Andreychuk used to do.

I haven't watched him play much but figured that was his specialty from what I'd heard, actually to the extent that I was worried that was all he could do. From that clip I see that he not only has good hands in front of the net, some of those were slick deflections, but he's also got a decent one timer and ability to snipe shots just inside the post from in close. I also really liked those backhand breakaway/shootout goals, looks like he might improve our shootout and help us pick up a few more points there.

Yeah anyone who thinks he's a hands of stone guy needs to see some of his shootout goals.

That's what I was trying to point out when I posted:

Yeah and Clarkson has better hands and fights almost anyone.

The best part of that video to me is how he went over the boards and straight at Dion.  I think he is lucky Phaneuf was at the end of a shift but he went right at him and wouldnt take no for an answer. He will be fun to watch with Kadri and Lupul.

Yeah I'm picturing him crashing the net, Lupul circling around and looking for shots in the slot like he does and Kadri moving the puck around...should be pretty fun to watch and hopefully effective.

If that is how the lines shape up it will be interesting to see how that line and the JVR-Bozak-Kessel line compare ie. which we are calling the #1 as the season progresses.  Obviously Kessel has more speed and skill than Clarkson, but he is definitely softer.  Bozak isn't as skilled as Kadri but he is still pretty quick and has some passing and shooting skills.  JVR is younger than Lupul and scored at a 30-goal pace last year, but when Lupul was playing he was lights out burying pucks at a 56-goal pace over 82 games.

This isn't a criticism of Clarkson (well, not really), but this post prompted me to check out his shootout goals. All three of them were the exact same move, skate in and then backhand. I watched three of his failed attempts too and they were the same thing too. I watched two breakaway goals of his and a penalty shot goal, and you guess it same exact move.

It's working for him so far so hey we can't complain, but I hope he'll be able to pull out something new if coaches and goalies notice the same pattern I discovered in 3 minutes.

Kulemin does the same thing.

It took Mats about a year to figure out the shootout.  Then he did exactly the same thing every time:  Lazer forehand top shelf (unstoppable; ridiculous accuracy) or if the goalie over-commits to the unstoppable forehand, go backhand.  Maybe I'm misremembering but he didn't try to fool anyone with what he was going to do. He just beat the goalie.  So Clarkson being a one-trick pony on the shootout is just about the least of my concerns.

I was kind of hoping they brought him in to take it to the next level in the playoffs.  Shoot-outs are gimmicks that I wouldn't cater to.

So you're saying David Clarkson's backhand is equal to or greater than Mats Sundin's backhand.

Hey everyone, princedpw thinks David Clarkson has a better backhand than Mats Sundin!

So better hands than Wendel Clark and a better backhand than Mats Sundin.  Hoo boy, sign me up for 14 years not 7.

It's too early, I apologize.

Boy, can he fight.  He's definitely a scrapper, not to mention a banger with  scoring hands.  Just the type of player Leafs needed.  Can hardly wait to see him on ice!

Was just on TSN Radio and heard Clarkson's comment about telling his dad he was coming home to play for the Leafs.

I have to say he seems really calm and collected about his decision. Somehow I just know he is actually gonna be a Gary Roberts type who will just play his heart out for us. It would be nice to have that veteran sandpaper back.

I also think he is going to leave it ALL on the ice every single night. You just get the feeling that as soon as he steps on the ice in a Leaf jersey, the other teams are going to have their hands full any time they play the Leafs. I like that! We're due for a player like that in Toronto again. It's no surprise that his favorite player was Clark.

I think he will be in the realm of Darcy Tucker in terms of popularity and it won't take long at all to establish the fan adoration for the way he plays.

A friend in New Jersey says that's how he plays.  However, he gets injured by the end of the season and becomes less effective.

I'm not trying to be hyperbolic, I think Corn Flake got what I was trying to say. I just have a feeling he's going to be a very good player for us and a fan favorite.

Tucker and Clark are examples of that, yes. But how do you get a player to curb that? I don't think you can.

My comment wasn't meant to be 'smart-assed'. Im really hoping he can play a big part in making this team a contender in a year or two.
