Do you believe Burke would draft Rielly first overall?

I personally don't believe he does for the reasons outlined in this blog I contributed to tmlfans: http://www.tmlfans.ca/blogs/6314-dont-believe-burkes-hype but it begs a scary question, would Burke draft a defenceman who tore his ACL over the consensus number one pick? Not to knock Rielly, after reading up on him I think the kid has some serious potential but really?

Had the leafs won the lottery, or traded up to 1st.. well it doesn't matter either way, but if they were in that position and took rielly first, the outcome would have been an extremely angry fanbase.

It didn't happen, so it doesn't matter to me.

But if he had 1st pick I suspect he would take Yakupov.

I don't know that the ACL has anything to do with anything.  Galchenyuk tore his and went 3rd and some thought he could have gone first too.

Not that I don't think Yakupov makes sense at #1, but didn't he have a concussion? You can't really bring up injury issues as a reason to not to draft a player in a draft loaded with prospects that had injury plagued seasons.

Not a chance.  No one thought Rielly was the top talent in the draft.  If he really thought this he would have done like calgary and traded down.  You still get the player you want but also get something extra.

Does it really matter what we believe?  Jay Feaster said his pick, #21 overall would be regarded as the best player in the entire draft in 10 years time when people look back. GMs all like to put spin on their picks.

I don't care whether it's true or not. Burke has said lots of stuff for public consumption.

What I'm more concerned about is that it's a virtual lock that Burke will want this guy in the team's lineup in the fall.

I don't see the point of saying it if it weren't true.

Also, "begs the question" does not mean "raises the question".

I don't really care, I'll take him at his word if I have to come down on a side, some won't but what does it really matter?

Honestly, I really don't care and I'm not really sure why anyone would care, unless it's to try and justify in your mind your thoughts that Burke is completely incompetent and lost his mind just before or after arriving in Toronto.

To the point of why anyone would DARE to draft anyone other than Yakupov 1st overall, this I would contest... Ryan Murray could and probably (maybe) should have gone 1st overall based on what appeared to be a rather insane level of demand for him.  I'm guessing a lot of teams wanted that pick and if Howsen wasn't going to trade down even for (rumored) entire stock of Islanders picks, they clearly think the kid is a mega-stud and so did at least one other team.

Maybe since basically none of us have seen this guy play we should shut up and wait and see what he can do on the ice next season before deciding that Burke is a fool for even considering drafting Rielly 1st overall.

Oh please oh please can we place some money on that statement?

Reason #1: Last year of Burke's contract. Adding a talented 18 year old defenseman could be just that piece of optimism that gets Burke an extension from the penny pinchers at Rogers and Bell.

Reason #2: Burke stated that the Leafs had him rated no. 1 in this draft. If I'd ever heard a tee-up for high early expectations...

Reason #3: The type of talent this kid has. He'll look good against pros because he's bringing the effortless skating and puck handling skills that stand out in training camps.

Reason #4: History. This organization has no issues with playing 18 year olds when they are deemed to be good enough for the NHL.

He just missed a big chunk of his season with a torn ACL.  I'd be HIGHLY surprised if they kept him in the league after that, let alone that we have a lot of D already.

Sure. Loser donates $25 to TMLFans.ca.

If Morgan Rielly plays 1 game or more for the Toronto Maple Leafs during the 2012-13 regular season excepting games after the WHL season has ended, you donate $25 to www.tmlfans.ca (I'm assuming you're not an owner of the site).

If Morgan Rielly is returned to juniors without playing an NHL game in the 2012-13 regular season, I'll donate $25 to www.tmlfans.ca.

Are we on?
