Game Notes

ANA
?Anaheim plays tonight and tomorrow and the goalie split is unknown. Bernier (6-2-0, 2.89 GAA, .901 Sv%) will either play against his former team or in his home province against the Habs
?Randy Carlyle will return to the ACC for the first time in almost exactly 2 years (Dec. 20, 2014). Yesterday Randy claimed that he was never given a reason for his dismissal
?Hampus Lindholm is off to a rough start after signing his new deal. He has just 1 goal and 3 assists in 19 games. He's still 2nd on the team among defencemen in CF%
?Former Leaf Korbinian Holzer has the worst CF% among any NHL defenceman this season (37.30%) and still somehow manages to make a NHL pay-cheque. He's the only defenceman to play over 50 minutes this season to be below 40%

TOR
?Andersen (12-7-6, 2.63 GAA, .919 Sv%) will likely start for the Leafs, he will of course be up against the team where he spent his first 3 NHL seasons
?Jake Gardiner has 5 points in his last 5 games, and is already one goal away from matching his total from last season
?UPDATE: Gauthier and Leivo will play for Bozak and Smith who are both out with injuries. Gardiner is sick but is expected to play

Injuries

?Clayton Stoner - Lower Body - Injured Reserve
?Simon Despres - Concussion - Injured Reserve
?Nicolas Kerdiles - Concussion - Injured Reserve
?Nate Thompson - Achilles - Injured Reserve
Code:

?Nathan Horton - Back - Out indefinitely
?Joffrey Lupul - ?\_(ツ)_/? - Out indefinitely
?Stephane Robidas - Old - Out indefinitely
?Martin Marincin - Lower Body - Injured Reserve
?Tyler Bozak - Lower Body - Out Monday
?Ben Smith - Upper Body - Out Monday
?Jake Gardiner - Illness - Likely Monday

Ummm, your coaching was bad and you should feel bad? The embarrassing degree to which your teams were outplayed on an almost nightly basis? Failure to understand how toasters work?

To be fair, he did say a reason.

I give him credit, he doesn't want to get into the details with the media.

I guess I'm one of the few supporting Randy...those were tough days with a very different mandate.  I think he squeezed what he could out of a lousy roster, and I give him a lot of credit for developing some guys, especially Gardiner.

He might be old school, but I think it's a classy move to just say there was no reason given...I'm sure he remembers what the media is like in Toronto, and he wasn't going to feed them anything to blabber on about.

Time to feed the Goat, Freddie recalled.

Tyler Bozak, Ben Smith and Jake Gardiner not on the ice as #Leafs morning skate gets underway

I'm a little surprised that Gauthier got the call-up over Froese. We all know how much Babcock loved him last season, he's a right-handed shot while Freddy is a leftie, and statistically he's having a much better season than the Goat.

But regardless, here's hoping Freddy impresses if he does indeed play.

Lines at practice with Smith and Bozak absent:

Doesn't really seem like saying he was never given a reason for his firing is trying to stay out of it with the media.

Agreed. Seems much more like he's taking a shot at them. Staying out of it would have been saying something like "that's between me and the team/Shanahan/etc." rather than "they never told me why they were firing me."

Oh boy, please, I will love to see this!

He dressed Colton Orr over Clarke MacArthur in the playoffs....

Well, on the spot, and not wanting to make an inflammatory statements, maybe that was the best thing he could come up with.

Regardless, I give him credit for not taking the bait.

I don't get it. How is that less inflammatory than anything else he could have said. I don't know what he was asked exactly but typically it's assumed coaches will get a reason for his dismissal. By saying the Leafs didn't give him one he's painting them in a worse light than if he'd said "I don't want to repeat it" or, assuming the reason they gave him for his firing was legit, just saying what it was.

Saying they never gave him a reason, and again I don't know what question he was asked, is making it as much of a story as it could be short of saying he was fired for the toaster thing.

With Corrado going in, I'm assuming Carrick comes out?

edit: just saw the note that Gardiner is not at the morning skate, so maybe for him?

Updates from the coach:

Kristen Shilton ‏@kristen_shilton
Gardiner is sick, Bozak has lower body injury, Smith has upper body injury. Both day to day. Gauthier, Leivo playing tonight.

Sounds like Gardiner is still planning on playing tonight. Poor Frankie.

Except saying he was never given a reason for his dismissal is an inflammatory statement. He very much did take the bait. Even on the spot, he could have said "no comment" or "they had their reasons" or any number of other easy to come up with off-the-cuff statements that don't make it seem like he wasn't told exactly why he was removed from his position.
