NYRangers 3 Montreal 1. Rangers lead series 2 games to 0.
Montreal goaltender Dustin Tokarski tried valiantly, but in the end, what mattered were the results on the scoreboard, as the determined New York Rangers along with a "phenomenal" Lundqvist stymied a much-improved Montreal effort.
The Rangers Lundqvist was superb as the Habs directed 41 shots in his direction, many of them dangerous. His Rangers teammates, particularly Krieder, Nash, and St.Louis continued to excel, especially Nash who scored the game-winner.
Being undisciplined hasn't helped Montreal's cause in this series, as the 'patient' Rangers have taken very well advantage of the powerplay. Once again, the Nash goal was the result of that. Perhaps that was the shot that got past Tokarski too easily -- the one-timer partly hit his glove before bouncing into the net. Some say that Carey Price would have stopped that one.
Whatever. Lundqvist was the main man, and in what was supposed to have been a goaltending showdown between "King" Henrik and Price will never materialize as Price's knee injury knocked him out of this series.
?You know what? The reason why we lost the game tonight was Lundqvist,? said Habs coach Michel Therrien. ?Lundqvist was phenomenal, phenomenal. Stole the game."
?He made a few more big saves, game-changers, than I did and that was the difference tonight,? said Tokarski.
?We can feel good about (that game) ? I think there?s a lot of stuff we can build on,? Canadiens forward Brendan Gallagher said after Monday?s 3-1 loss. ?We didn?t get the result we wanted, but if we have that effort for the rest of the series we feel we?ll give ourselves a chance.?
On to New York Thursday night.
N.B. It was the first time dating back to 1975 that the Montreal Canadiens had given up 10 total goals in consecutive playoff games.
