Explosions at finish line of Boston Marathon

The little boy who was killed was a Bruins fan -- saw a picture of him in his jersey, probably at the Garden.  It makes you heartsick.

Picture of 8 year old lost provided by his teacher

Some pictures are worth a thousand words. This one is worth much more.

it's bad enough when you see the 'breaking news' and read it in the paper later. When it's a child, and a face and name are attached, it just brings it too close to home. Breaks my heart. May the perpetrators rot in an eternal hell.

Now they're reporting this is not the case... Lots of conflicting reports right now.

Why would they report something if they weren't 100% sure it was accurate?

Is that typical practice for CNN?  Jumping the gun a bit?

Breaking News: CNN is now reporting that reports of a reported arrest are inaccurate. Never fear, they will soon report on the reporter who initially broke the reported story.  Reportedly.

They're actually said they had both local and federal sources so I think it was fair for them to tell people what their sources told them... Next time they may want to get additional sources.

Today's news brought to you by the once deceased Gordon Lightfoot.

it's effing CNN. Those American news channels are all more interested in being first to report 'breaking news' regardless of whether it's actually accurate or not. They can always backtrack later. And they do. Drives me nuts. Take the extra five minutes and CHECK your facts before you go reporting them (one of the reasons my husband got out of the news reporting business)

It's happening to others. AP & FOX got it wrong.

Here's another flip by ABC today
ABC link

First they give an all clear at the Boston courthouse today:
3:39 pm ET: All clear at courthouse, say Boston police, following bomb threat.

6 minutes later:
3:45 p.m. ET:  Boston police now say courthouse has not been given the all clear, and they are  still investigating.

In the crazy race to be first and with social networking, etc, it's tough to report like this and keep it accurate.

But who are those sources? That's the sort of thing that's really declined as a standard of journalism and speaks to what LHF was saying. In a race to be first over responsible reporting, CNN decided to use sources that couldn't be held accountable when their information turned out to be wrong. If they had said John Smith with the FBI(or whatever) then A)the public would have a legitimate option to weigh the source's credibility and B) someone would be called to task if their information proved incorrect.

Good journalists will only use an anonymous source in a case where the secrecy is necessary, like Watergate. These days anonymity is just traded for access which is seen as necessary because, as LHF says, people put speed over accuracy. By using an anonymous source you're essentially asking the public to trust you and when it goes wrong the blowback is on you. That's why CNN doesn't have a glittering reputation for journalism.

Oh, I'm with you. To be honest, I don't recall if they used the names of their sources but either way, no harm in cross-checking.

It's why you get idiot papers like the NY Post talking about 30 people dead and hundreds injured, only to go back and try and delete the information to make themselves seem not to be wrong.    In general I really feel like "journalism" is dead.  I think the field has fully switched over into news entertainment.

Read the NY Times. They never reported anything like this and only extremely rarely have to make a retraction. They are far from perfect but they are the closest we have to a gold standard in the US.

It is totally crazy aroudn these parts.. The two who are brothers (20 and 19) held up a 7/11 in Cambridge.. Opened gunfire killing an MIT policeman.. Then carjacked an SUV. The owner of SUV was actually let go. One of the two brothers is dead and the other is being searched for. 6 towns cannot leave home. Bus/train service shut down. I saw so many police/military vehicles on way too work. This is absolutely crazy. This is all within a 15 minute radius of my home.. Can't believe this is happening
