You have to figure Burke is working the phones looking for a reliable goalie.  Gus just hasn't been able to find consistency, and in fairness to Scrivens, he's probably not ready for this yet.

Goose seems fine to me in the role he started out with, Scrivens has shown flashes of brilliance and that's a good sign but the Leafs need a starter, they can't run with 2nd and 3rd string goaltending for much longer the way it is.

True they need to shore up some frustrating bad habits defensively but with yo-yo goaltending those negative issues/tendencies are magnified noticeably.

You know who else showed flashes of brilliance? Bester. Really every goalie has an awesome save here and there - Scrivens just does not strike me as an NHL goalie.

Ok... I think I'm starting to whine now...

I don't mind the Leafs response here, they're in the game and getting some chances.

If I was Lupul I would have been pissed off by that hit too.

Seriously, this is an opportunity to put Gus in before it's too late.  If you aren't going to play him in a situation like this, send them both down and bring in Rynnas and whoever's available from the nearest beer league.

You don't think this is grasping at straws?

It was a two on one and a screen shot that scored on Scrivens. I'm more inclinded to be annoyed by all the odd man rushes tonight than goaltending, so far anyway.

So if a goaltender is in position, he is not obliged to, you know, make a save?

Kulemin should be benched. I think next to Dupuis he's been the most useless guy out there all season.

Oh c'mon, that's just not true. He's struggling but he hasn't been that bad.

I would put Brown on the 2nd in place of Kulemin and see if that produces some space for Grabovski.  I've refrained from criticizing that line this year but they are really dragging the offense down.

Two zip after one, eh?

Not good. Leafs best start winning again, or that 10-12-1 or whatever prediction that someone made a few games ago may become reality...

Who's been worse? Frattin? Sure, but he got sent down. Watch Kulemin's lazy stick check the next time he's "battling" for a puck. Useless.

And I had him pegged as the guy on that line that was most likely to sustain his production from last season.

That was me. I also said they'd be out of the playoffs by January.

Out as in 9th, or out as in effectively eliminated?

If you can name a guy who has saved every shot ever taken at him then I will concede your point. But until then I'll blame the Leafs' defense for the score tonight, not Scrivens' goaltending, maybe his puck handling, but that's a rookie mistake not a bad goaltending mistake.

The sad thing is of all the bad goaltending in the 80s, I think our goaltending right now is some of the worst we've seen in our history, and the 80s are biased since it was a high scoring era.

1985-86 Sv%
Don Edwards 860
Ken Wregget 875
Tim Bernhardt 853
Allan Bester 600
TOTAL (4) 80 861

Ewwww.

Although Belfour did take a lot of flack for his last season here, and it has been the beginning of the string of brutal netminding.
