Game 3: Leafs at Penguins - TSN 7:00 PM

I dont like the idea of Reimer starting tonight. I'd be starting Scrivens again, and putting Reimer in only if Scrivens looks shaky. Confidence is a fickle thing.

I guess the only good thing would be that Scrivens could play on Thursday without any worry of a devastating loss on his shoulders. It may be a totally different set of circumstances for Reimer and his next start should tonights game turn ugly.

Edit: I guess the upside would be a win for Riemer, and we'd have two pretty confident goalies.

Randy Carlyle says Leafs have yet to make a decision on Jake Gardiner's status tonight.

Seems unlikely that Gardiner would play tonight, but Carlyle did not rule it out.

Maybe Fraser is a place holder

If he plays tonight or not, its still a good sign for his imminent return that he is even a possibility for tonight.

MacArthur on the top line? He was absymal in Buffalo; couldn't even make a pass. That's going to be a short-lived experiment imo.

Carlyle has mentioned his general concern about the Leafs not going to the net. Then he constructs a #1 line of players who typically do not go to the tough places. As well, of the three lines, the first line seemed to be the one that was working the best. The line up changing that first line surprised me.

Maybe it's just a message. I'll bet Lupul sees first line duty before the nights over.

Yeah, I've never found Lupul unwilling to go to the corners or stand in front of the net/crash the net.

i agree with you ..it makes little sense to make the top line softer ...also if you were going to move anyone around ..wouldn't it be to maybe give kadri some more minutes?

Earlier in his career, he may have had that problem. But I recall posting about him going to the net when he showed up in Toronto and was impressed because going to the net has been a problem for the Leafs for a number of recent years.

Holmstrom wore extra padding on his back (pic of Holmstrom's back padding below):

and to protect his legs, arms, wrists and ankles.

I don't know why more NHLers haven't done that.

I don't expect smaller finesse guys like Bozak or Kessel to be able to do it. But guys like Antropov & Ponikarovsky could have been more effective if they had done it more than they did. Now JVR has an opportunity and he could change his career path if he can pull it off.

Good decision re Gardiner -- no reason at all to rush him back.

And why all the angst over lineup shuffling?  Let Carlyle try anything and everything under the sun.  This team is not likely to make the playoffs, let alone contend.  Use this short season to give the young guys experience and sort out what their future roles might be.

I wonder if this means that he failed the latest medical?

He passed the baseline test a few days ago, though still reported feeling some symptoms, so, I imagine it's more precautionary than anything else.

Surprised that Fraser is in, not because of Komi, but Holzer played twice as much as Fraser against Buffalo so I guessed if Randy had to choose between these two, it would be Korbinian. Interesting.

After the Buffalo game Carlyle complimented Fraser's play more than Holzer's. Said Holzer looked a little nervous, which I agree with.

Gardiner plays tonight, Holzer to the Marlies.

Of the D on the bubble, Holzer was the only one waiver exempt (thx to Busta PM that confirmed - and contradicted Star article yesterday)

I'd also say that Fraser adds some toughness as an option for Carlyle
