Game 34: Panthers @ Leafs - Mar. 26, 7:00pm - Sportsnet, Fan 590

I'd say the $5M number would be what he'd probably see on a longer term deal, but I don't think either side is likely looking at that at this point. It's more likely that he gets a 2 year deal in the $3M-$3.5M range.

I've brought up these comparables before, but it's either going to be short term for $3-4mil (Matt Duchene) or long-term for $5-6mil (Hall/Eberle). Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I can't think of a single player whose second contract was for Duchene's length but for Hall/Eberle's money. I'd be stunned if he got $5mil on a short term deal.

I'd say Kadri will get whatever he wants after his display this year.
I don't know if he will deserve it, but I will give him this - he has put in his time in the AHL and that should count for something.

Has anyone got one  in the 5-6 mill range after such a small NHL sample size?

Career wise? I don't think so. O'Reilly is the only one in that range coming off an entry level contract that I can think of - but he's not a very good comparable...

What's better though.. getting Kadri at $5 mil x 5 years now or sign him for $3.5 for 2 or 3 and get hit with $7+ after that? Assuming he doesn't regress for some reason, he's a PPG player. He will get $7 in a few years.

Might be better to lock him up now, slightly overpaid but have it work out in the Leafs' favor down the road.

Hockey is getting more popular all the time, this small lockout has not affected the fan base in the least. We can look forward to expanded spending ceilings in the next few years. Say 80 million???

Personally, I see him signing something like a 4m x 4y.

I don't see how he gets 5m when Lupul got 5.25m after a ppg season last year and an actual previous track record as opposed to just a half season.

Though I've been wrong before.

He will be in the 2-3.5 range for the next three yrs. anyone who thinks he gets 5 is way off base. one level at a time boys. Lets not pay him Lupul coin untill he has a track record.

But at the rate he's going, Lupul money might be a steal for Kadri.

Lucky for the Leafs its a short season, this will get us any players due to be signed a bit cheaper. but as for Kadri, like I said he has not reached that 5mil level yet. but he may very well jump it if his game goes up another level between now and then.

Didn't Kessel get 5 x 5.4 on his second deal?

Yeah, but he had already had the following seasons at that point.

Kessel
Year                                  GP    G      A    PT    +/-
2008-09 Boston NHL 70 36 24 60 23
2007-08 Boston NHL 82 19 18 37 -6
2006-07 Boston NHL 70 11 18 29 -12

Kadri has not played enough to prove he deserves that kind of contract.  His skills and compete level are impressive.  I wonder how he does in a full 82 Game season, will he be able to sustain it.

Tyler Myers was the first guy to jump in my mind. He got $5.5M after his rookie season when he got 37 points.

He actually signed his extension after two full seasons (162 games) in the NHL.

Shoot...my eyes completely missed the 48-point rookie season.  :-[

Regardless, I thought it was nuts then and still think so now.
