A mid April game between the Leafs and Islanders that actually means something. What is this, 1978?

GO LEAFS GO!

One of the craziest series I've evern witnessed. Man, that was bad blood.

Game 1 of 2002 ECQF between Toronto and the Islanders was 11 years ago today.

Nervous about this game, but here's hoping for a big win. :)

I am as well. Isles are 7-1-2 in their last 10. Tied with the Pens with the best pts win% in the NHL in the last 10 games behind only the hot Capitals. This is no gimme.

I am not at all.. this team knows it has sucked the last two games and will be here to play. un like the wash game where I thought we would lose, I think we win this one for sure.

I am a bit concerned as it seems other teams have cranked the intensity up and the Leafs are stuck in neutral.  A good, spirited effort to night would go a long way to reassuring me that they will be ready to go for the playoffs.

Was that the series where Sundin was hurt and Mogs scored the GWG in Game 7?  My memory is hazy.

I think it was Travis Green who scored the eventual GWG in game 7.

Could be -- I have a recollection of Mogs getting a game winner, maybe it was G6 to keep the series going....

EDIT: Nope, you were right, it was Green and then Mogs sealed it with an EN.  That's what I remember, leaping out of my chair when he scored at the end.

I was in the end reds at that game -- it was fantastic.

You didn't expect me to say I think they would lose again did you.
I'm just going by the pattern they have played by all season, after a bad one they tend to step it up.

Leafs win this one and clinch a playoff spot in Ottawa, which at the end of the game the Leaf players come out to centre ice to salute the Leaf fans in Ottawa for their support.

The Islanders fans that came here (actually on the old site, penaltybox.com) during that series were just insane.  Really frightening people.  And then later those playoffs, the Carolina fans coming here were just unbelievably polite, nice people.  What a stark contrast.

Remember a couple years after that series, when Owen Nolan, somewhat inexplicably, beat up Steve Webb behind the net and Webb pretty much stood there and took it, Webb was playing for the penguins at the time.

I went to game 3 in that 2002 series by myself to Long Island.. (It was the game Sean Bates scored a penalty shot on Cujo).. Anyway had my Leafs jersey on..A group of three guys were in the concourse after epriod one. Had a yooungg kid maybe about 8 or 9 with them. One of the guys tells the kid go ahead and hit him. So the kid punched me in the stomach out of the blue. I couldn't beleive what I was seeing... He said do it again.. I kind of snapped on who I think ws the father threatining him and swearing at him like a trooper. Security came over and I explained what happend but othing came out of it. I was stunned.. Good times at the Colliseum

Even as a non-Leaf, Owen Nolan was one of my favourite players.  Tough. could skate, hit, score, fight and had a great personality.

I wish it had worked out better with him and the Leafs.

Wow Owen Nolan, Gary Roberts and Darcy Tucker...what I nice tough grinding line that should have been able to score a bunch of goals. A line like that would fit nicely on this team.

I was so mad after that game that when I got home, admittedly drunk, I tossed my keys onto a shelf a little too hard and smashed a picture frame. It was actually a light toss, but the keys were heavy and I was obviously angry. My then-wife flipped out and shortly after we were divorced.

So it just goes to show, that even a 6-1 drubbing in the playoffs at the hands of the Islanders can have a happy ending!
