Game of Thrones (S6)

I am hoping more storylines start to merge together soon. Arya's slow moving arc could really stand a good old fashion Rocky montage to speed along her training. I can also do without the Iron Islands and Samwell's story.

I'm sure he'll be juuuuusssst fiiiiiiiine.

I'm a bit confused by the iron islands plot. So theon and amy from big bang theory took off with the fleet, and the 20 people left are going to build 1000 ships using, wood I guess, which doesn't seem to be in large supply from the general surroundings?

Its a dumb subplot. Hey, this chick led your people and did a good job but Im Euron, killed your king and have no history or track record with you. MALE ME YOUR KING.

And yeah the follow up makes no sense. We finally built a fleet! *10-20 yrs later.

There is a youtube channel, "Alt+Shift+X" that recaps every episode and ties all the stories together, I suggest checking it out.

If you're into deep analysis of the tv show (and the books), replete with all the callbacks and theories you could possibly keep track of, New Rockstars does a great job of this.

I'm guessing that was a situation where budgetary limitations in terms of hiring extras led to us having to imagine that there's a lot more than 20 although the whole thing was pretty badly framed. It sure didn't seem like Theon/Theon's sister with a name I'm pretty sure I never learned had enough peeps to sail away with what looked like hundreds of ships.

It's not a particularly interesting subplot, but, I have to believe there's going to be a significant payoff from it, otherwise, I can't see why they'd be bothering with it at this point. There's enough substance to the other story lines that they don't need filler subplots.

The Iron Islands has the only substantial fleet of seafaring vessels left in either Westeros or Essos in the TV universe. Both the royal fleet, and Stannis' hodgepodge merchant/pirate fleet were decimated at Blackwater, Mereen's ships were torched.

The Iron Islands storyline sounds like it's going to intersect with Daenerys at some point this season probably. I read a theory that says Euron was the one behind the burning of the ships in Meereen.

Re: Euron, burner of ships -- Hard to gauge the passage of time on the show, but the Iron Isles (northwest coast Westeros) are about as far as you can get from Meereen (south Essos) by sea, no (short of being smack dab in the eternal Winter of the North? Which is not to say Euron couldn't have agents in Meereen, since he is quite well travelled. He seems more hands on in the show.

Dany riding Drogon over a fleet of Reaver ships ferrying a Dothraki mega-khalasar sounds like the eventual game plan. The question is going to be where she makes landfall: King's Landing as invading conquerer, or straight to the Wall as a hero.

Will arrive at KL to conquer, be convinced by John Snow to go defeat White Walkers instead.  Maybe.

That may be looking at it through too modern a prism. These are still super-patriarchal societies. They said they'd never had a Queen before and even someone like the girl with the dragons essentially had to have dragons before anyone took her seriously as a ruler.

So yeah, to our modern concepts of gender equality it seems dumb but that's true of 90% of the show.

Yeah I was actually surprised they all seemed somewhat on board with whats-her-name prior to Euron showing up.

To be fair, it required a rousing speech by a male heir to get that to happen. Their response to her was pretty lukewarm before Theon gave her the proverbial thumbs up.

Yeah but I was pretty surprised they held Theon in that high of a regard too, considering all that happened to him (as Euron so helpfully pointed out upon his arrival). Those guys having a king without a penis is like the Habs having a coach who can't speak french. It's preposterous (according to their community)!

edit: I meant to have that penis remark about Theon, not his sister, since some of those guys were wondering why he wasn't stepping up. Although that obviously works for both of them.

Only after the remaining male heir of Balon Greyjoy gave his blessing, you'll note as already noted.

It's a common theme in the other parts of Westeros. A lot of the Dorne plot in the books was based around the Rhoynar tradition of succession being the eldest heir of either sex, rather than the eldest male heir being the successor to the throne, leading a faction of Dorne to recognize Myrcella as the Queen, rather than Tommen as the King, following Joffrey's demise. On the show, with the assassination of Doran and Trystane, the succession for Dorne lies in Obara (Sand Snake with Spear).

This season is setting the stage for women being the controllers of the various regions of Westeros: Sansa in the North (and likely the Vale as well), Margaery Tyrell/Cersei Lannister in King's Landing, Ellaria/Sand Snakes in Dorne. Danaerys eventually.

Nah, I think that's pretty weak sauce. Either these are deeply ingrained societal norms or they're not. Could you imagine George Washington saying "Nah, you know, I think my Wife should be the next president" and Americans of the 1700's being on board? Regardless of how rousing a speech it was?

I agree but the show did portray them as being basically on-board in the like 10 seconds between Theon's speech and Euron's arrival.

Wasn't that because there was no one else 'declaring' to be king?  Maybe I'm forgetting exactly how it went.
