General Leafs Talk

Suppose Dion does make money off the hats and redbull makes money off Dion wearing the hat.

Again, I can see why MLSE might be annoyed he doesn't wear a leafs hat and advertise for them, but why do we care?  Why does Cox care?  We have no stake in the game either way... I haven't read the article but it really doesn't seem like something a fan should be even giving a second thought to.

Wouldn't an endorsement for sticks and skates work like that too?

Well, no. Sticks and skates aren't visible in a post game press scrum and there's no Maple Leafs branded alternative either way.

Well, it seems like it was a tweet rather than an article and I'm not sure Cox presented it in a manner that reads like he's saying that you or I should really care.

If I'm playing Devil's Advocate then I think something could be said that if players are profiting from their post-game/practice interviews then there becomes incentive to be the focus of those post-game interviews. I'm not sure that's entirely conducive to a team-first atmosphere and attitude.

As for fans, well, one of the reasons Phaneuf is on camera a lot is because he's the Captain. A fan might find the idea of the team's Captain profiting off of that Captaincy distasteful.

He was pressing the players/Carlyle really hard, in case of players rightly so. Would love to see his one-on-one with Burke.

Did Cox get upset when Tucker and Corson wore the KEWL hats all the time in interviews?

At the same time I don't think anybody would give answers to such a prick.

And Dion wearing that damn Red Bull hat again.  *shakes head*

That's great.  It's like the guy is a fan.  I think more reporters should be doing this.  That's kind of one of the downsides of Leafs TV.  It's pro leaf propaganda.

Tbh I thought he was trolling the whole time and came off as more of an asshole than a professional.

I understand where your coming from, but honestly, I sometimes think this team gets sheltered a little bit.  They have to face facts.  They collapsed.  There are no rosy stories to go with this.  And people need to answer for it.  In the "real" world, people get fired when they don't do their jobs.  In NHL land, the contracts are guaranteed regardless of performance, so I see nothing wrong with them having to pay the piper somewhere.

didn't land rover give crosby a range rover in his rookie year...wouldn't that make crosby a bad captain everytime he drives somewhere?

I've been trying to remember what Sundin used to wear during interviews.....maybe not anything. We got to watch his hair disappear over the years.

I remember Gary Roberts wearing a hat from the golf course he owned. No one complained about that if I recall.

Tucker had that company with Shane Corson... they used to wear hats promoting it.

Sidney Crosby is ALWAYS in a ball cap... I've never paid attention but I'm guessing it's a Reebok one or something.

Work like that meaning paid to use them and there are interviews in the pregame and between periods where one could do that, though skates would be tough. Whether there's a Leaf alternative or not doesn't really matter to me, could just go without.

I mean I really don't care if he wears a balloon hat after the game many of these guys get paid to do things besides play hockey and it doesn't really seem like that big a deal, no more so than Sundin doing a Nike commercial to me.

It seems like an unnecessary reach for a reason not to like Phaneuf but then that's Cox, I agree with the 'oldman yells at cloud' conclusion.

What a horrific signing, I'd wager at least 60/70 of the 90 he has missed have been as a healthy scratch. That's almost a full season of paying him to sit in the press box and count towards the cap.

He has missed 76 games due to injury, 15 healthy.

The 15 healthy all came this season, 11 in February.

Hopefully, the next 164 games he misses with Leafs start soon.  ;)

In his defense, he seems to have handled it fairly well and has not seemed to have been a big locker room problem. So I don't deeply dislike the guy. But he's never been the same since his shoulder problem.

Some heads have to roll and his has to be somewhere near the top of their list. Evidently, "veteran leadership" that Nonis lamented as missing in his recent interview, wasn't of much use from Komisarek over the last six weeks.

That would only be a consistent analogy if the Penguins made and sold cars or if Crosby insisted on his press conferences taking place in front of his car.

But that's Cox's whole point, that Phaneuf is choosing to wear something from the company he endorses and not the club that pays his salary. He's not raising a fuss about the concept of endorsements, he specifically says choosing himself over the team. For something else to be comparable, there'd have to be another choice to be made that would help the team. That doesn't exist with sticks and skates.

Sundin's Nike commercial

Number of Maple Leaf crests in commercial: 2
Number of Nike swooshes in commercial: 0, as far as I could see

I'm sure that MLSE is very aware of each players' endorsements, and would have to approve such endorsements and their placements.

For all we know, MLSE may even get money from Red Bull for allowing their player to wear it during locker room interviews.

These players are all in the hockey business to make money, as MLSE is in it, so to me this is a non-issue and really none of my business.
