So, I just think I would have to be highly conservative this year if I was a GM. I would give offers to Suter and Parise (i doubt they come). I would hope the new CBA allows a free buyout of Komisarek. I would make a few trades to shuffle the deck chairs but take on no long term encumbrances. I would try to set myself up cap-wise for the year after this one. I would trade our expiring contracts at the deadline for picks and prospects but not before, hoping to get something for a Connolly, Armstrong, etc.
I have to agree with you here. I know Brian Burke must be under immense pressure to get results this off-season. Realistically though, how many of the gaping wounds the Leafs have in their roster can be patched up in one summer?
Gaping holes amount to a starting goalie and a #1 center you can lean on for heavy minutes. If Carlyle can get the team to play a cohesive system, the defense should be fine. I've seen lesser teams play good team defense by sticking to a system, if they can do it why can't the Leafs?
They could certainly find a #1 goaltender (but it is likely going to have to be a trade as the guys on the UFA track are either very unproven - Harding; or really old/injury risks - Biron/Vokoun). The problem is, say they acquire Luongo, how can the system afford to acquire a top flight goaltender AND acquire a #1 center. Maybe they can grab Parise, but is he actually a true #1 center at this point...at least the kind the Leafs need. He's a top notch player, but he's pretty darn small.
