PITTSBURGH -- The Toronto Maple Leafs have traded the rights to goaltender Jonas Gustavsson to the Winnipeg Jets for a seventh-round conditional draft pick in 2013.

The six-foot-three, 192-pound Swede is due to become a free agent this summer.

Update July 1st:  TSN reports Jonas Gustavsson signs with Detroit. 2 Years at 1.5M per.

I must say - I didn't catch onto the pun at first in their headline and my heart blinked for a moment.

Not really surprising, but it makes me sad nonetheless. I also had an irrational emotional attachment to him and really wanted to see him get another chance.

Hopefully that means the Jets will sign him. I stll think he can be a pretty good NHL goalie given a better chance.

I still think he has the potential to be a starter in the NHL, at the least, a capable backup. In Winnipeg he won't be under as much pressure to perform or pressure to be the #1 guy if Pavelec is signed.

Hopefully he signs with the Jets, so I can cheer for him next season, except when they play the Leafs.

Brian Burke during the 2011-12 season:

Burke disagreed with a reporter who suggested inconsistent goaltending was at the root of the Maple Leafs' problems at various times this season.

"I think the goaltending, at times, has been brilliant," the GM shot back. "I think the reason we're still alive [in the playoff hunt], statistically, is because Jonas Gustavsson saved our ass twice during the season [when Reimer was hurt and struggling].

I agree.. I always held out hope..He may still turn out to be a beauty. Just not our beauty

A better chance than basically being given the keys to the net this year when Reimer went down and being totally mediocre?

A better chance than Toronto's collection of "professional hockey players" gave him, yes.

We'll see. My initial excitement about Gustavsson evaporated over time as he failed to show any consistency. Yeah, Komisarek screwed him over more than once, but the "professional hockey players" on the Leafs weren't the ones letting wide shots somehow get past them in overtime.

He seems like a nice guy who was dealt some tough blows over the last two or three years, so I wish the best for him. I'm just not of the belief he'll ever amount to much in the NHL.

That happened once. And while it's convenient to pretend that Komisarek was the only inept blueliner instead of the most glaring example of how poorly Burke built the team the reality is that in all of Gus' time here he played behind a bunch that was to solid team defense what Godzilla is to urban development.

Behind the same team Reimer has put up a 92.7 SV% at ES, compared to Gus' 90.9 SV%.  The league average has been about 92.4 SV% at ES.

This site (http://www.pensionplanpuppets.com/2012/5/22/3032761/why-signing-a-veteran-goalie-may-not-help) looked at all the goalies in the league above the age of 25 and under the age of 37 who have played 40 or more games the past 3 seasons and who posted an ES SV% of .905 or better.  Gustavsson was dead last among the 35 goalies.

I really wanted him to do well here, and thought he was for awhile this past season, but the numbers have been pretty overwhelmingly poor for him, even in context with the Leafs.

Yeah. The team in front of him wasn't very good, but, the truth of the matter is Gustavsson brought more poor performances than good performances.

True. But one might also say that his brilliant play was negated by some very bad play, usually within the same game. So his performance was inconsistent. Which of course is functionally the same as poor.

All this quote tells me is that Burke is the GM and defends his own players even if he believes goaltending was the issue. He's not one to throw players under the bus and pin losses on them.

Ok. So why are ES SV percentages more relevant than overall sv %?  I'd say a goalie's 5 on 4 numbers are pretty important in rating his play.
