And no, CTB, I don't agree that we all "should" subscribe to TA.  Why should I if I don't want to?

I'm going to go out on a crazy limb here and say that CtB wasn't being literal but was just saying that he thinks the Athletic is good.

U his spox?

Yeah I mean to clarify I don't think anybody here has a legal or even moral obligation to sign up for the Athletic.

But you still should.

I thought I'd keep it to one paragraph (in quotation), and post sone graphics with some explanation.  Yes, theathlrtic is behind a paywall (in which I am a subscriber), but it shouldn't prevent us from at least keeping some postings to a bare minimum.

i'll use a more cautionary discretion next time (as CTB suggested).

This is probably the wrong place for this discussion but all I can say on my end is while I think it's good that a site like that exists for the people who like that sort of stuff, the day to day reporting on a team and statistical analysis of minutiae are, to me, pretty plastic without larger commentary on the moral/ethical/political issues involved with being a sports fan.

It's not a tricky line to make out, anything you had to pay to read isn't yours to post.

What we have here is a conflict between two goods.  It's good and fine for The Athletic to demand payment to see their material.  (Incidentally, from a strictly legal standpoint it's bad and not fine to violate their copyright by reposting -- which is, in fact, republishing -- anything more than a very small amount of material that might be considered "fair use," as we say here; I presume there's a similar doctrine in Canada.)

It's also good and fine that we have community discussions here that are open to anybody (since this site is not behind a paywall thanks to Rick & Co.'s endless generosity).

The conflict comes when people who are subscribers to TA want to discuss articles in-depth that us non-subscribers aren't privy to.  Although nobody intends it, that sets up a not-so-good dynamic: non-subscribers like me can't really participate fully in the conversation.

I'm not saying that subscribers to TA shouldn't post about what they read on there.  I'm just stating a fact that any subsequent conversations are qualitatively different than ones using information everyone has free access to.

And no, CTB, I don't agree that we all "should" subscribe to TA.  Why should I if I don't want to?  I've got plenty of other more important things to spend my limited money on, especially since I can get free high-qual hockey analysis all over the place (not the least of which is here).  God bless TA and their paymodel if they can make it fly, but I don't particularly care if they succeed or not.

I agree 100%.  But a tweet  with a photo/graph/video shouldn't hurt.

I don't subscribe to The Athletic and have zero problems with people discussing their articles here. If the conversation is so enlightening that I feel I'm missing out, I'll subscribe. For now, I'll settle for the cheapo articles that are written by troglodytes.

Good Luck Athletic.  I like the idea of paying for sports articles without buying the whole paper, but I would prefer that concept applied to the games on TV.

Comparing PK schemes between Carolina and Detroit.
I picked this thread because Hainsey played a role in the Carolina PK scheme, it's very similar to what the Leafs do, both head coaches in question operated under Babcock's tutelage, and it's an Athletic article.

The quote above touches on what I saw in Babcock's systems over the past two seasons: using the structure to create pressure situations to generate opportunities (for offence or puck retrieval).

Fixed.

Since this has become the Athletic thread. It says right now one year is on sale for 35. How much did you guys pay?

I paid 39.99. Regular price is 49.99 If anyone is looking to sign up they should always wait for a sale. It seems like it often goes 20-30% off from time to time.

Strikethroughs don't get it done.  You and you and you and you are all in violation of copyright and, mark my words, there WILL be hell to pay.*

* N.B.: It's behind a paywall too, over on the far bank of the River Styx.

Hainsey vs Zaitsev analysis.

Zaitsev's defensive flaws are well known: he got swamped at times under the workload he was given; he was tentative at the blueline (played it 'safe'), leading to sustained DZ time.

Hainsey is slated to play with Rielly (kind of like Zaitsev was supposed to play with Hunwick, right?); his skill set is nearly the opposite. They're both quite mobile, but Hainsey uses it for gap-closing disruption defence, rather than any offence whatsoever. While his numbers look poor, I believe Zaitsev's skating ability will show better next year when he's not so conservative.

Here's Zaitsev marking Ovechkin (video).

Having the two split the heavy minutes with their respective partners could go a long way. Since Babcock doesn't trust Carrick for some reason, it'll be good to get Gardiner more elite minutes.
