Idiocracy

Can we rename this thread to something else? The Donald doesn't need anymore free publicity. I hate the man so much that it hurts a little just seeing his name.

The new thread name is catchy, but more than a bit unfair.

Clinton got 3 million more votes and didn't appoint a single SCOTUS justice
Biden got 8 million more and can't pass anything he ran on
North Carolinians voted for a Democratic governor, and the GOP politicians in other branches of government promptly reduced the governor's power to act
The good people of Wisconsin voted for a Democratic state house by about 10 points, and the GOP reads outnumber the Dems by an almost 2-1 margin. Similar outcomes in Michigan and Pennsylvania.

Seems, despite our idiot problem, a healthy majority of Americans are voting for outcomes their system of government isn't delivering.

"Anocracy" doesn't roll off the tongue like "Idiocracy," and it needs a dictionary. But it is probably more apt.

Bringing people together against a common enemy

The Jan 6 committee means nothing if charges/consequences don't come from it.

Republicans are already trying to call any protest an insurrection to diminish the significance.  They don't care.  They continue to not care.  They will continue to vote Republican and Democrats will not vote in the mid-terms because Biden isn't progressive enough so their solution is to let the Republicans get complete control of the Senate because they don't understand how their political system works.

If these hearings plus Roe v Wade getting overturned doesn't motivate Democrats to vote in these midterms, nothing will.

Democrats are like the frog in boiling water. Doesn't jump until the heat kills it.

I have no faith in the US system that allows whomever is least scrupulous to have more control. You'll never win a fight with one hand tied behind your back while the other side beats you like a pinata.

I have no doubt that it is motivating them today.  I have grave doubts that it will still be enough of a motivator come November.

Good point. With media being so ready to move onto the next story to get clicks, the narrative will have changed numerous times between now and then.

I don't think it's as simple as thinking that this sort of thing should motivate Democrats when Democrats, as we speak, control the House, Senate and Executive branch and seem reluctant to actually use the levers available to them to protect things like abortion access.

If the Democratic message in November is "Vote for us so we can keep fighting" then it can motivate. If it's "Vote for us because if you don't we won't be able to start fighting sometimes in the future where 'fighting' is understood not to involve things like expanding the Supreme Court or ending the filibuster or threatening any of our own anti-choice politicians", well, it won't.

It's totally normal that 6 unelected weirdos who have positions for life get to make decisions like these that will effect the entire world for generations to come. Totally normal.

In the vasty majority of cases, the president's party loses seats in the midterms. The high-water mark for gaining seats was 90 years ago, and that occurred after the most vibrant and creative run of legislating and executive action in the country's history. Biden's party, meanwhile, can't pass what he ran on and is likely to go into the midterms after the re-start of student loan payments, a higher than normal increase in Obamacare premiums, and a newly widespread increase in Medicare premiums. Thumb in the eye to the young, the middle, and the old.

2020 was democracy's the US system's reprieve. Sentence will be served in 2024. 2022 is going to be strapping the condemned to the gurney.
