In your opinion, how good do you think Phaneuf really is?

He hardly hits any more. He skates like Frankenstein. He bungles the puck and gives up odd man rushes. He gives the puck away in our end time after time. Offensively he's good but not consistent.

Looking at his game overall he's not a top D man.

Like cw said -- disappointing.

Haha, good post. I think Phaneuf is alright, not $6.5 mil worthy, but paired with a consistent guy like Gunnarsson Dion can be productive and protected. The problem is the Leafs are full of flatfooted guys on the backend like Schenn/Franson/Komi. When 3/4 of 6 guys can't skate on the backend and the forwards play a run-and-gun style, it's easy for the opposing coach to create a gameplan to counter and forecheck hard- hence Dion gets dummied off the rush.

Phaneuf isn't my major concern right now for the Leafs, there are a bunch more pressing issues. Jeez.

He is not as good as most of us had hoped when we got him.

He is overpaid for what he does.

But he is much, much, much better than the boatload of s**t that we traded for him.

This part I strongly disagree with. He's made some great hits this year. Like I said in another thread today, I was at the game last night and watched Phaneuf a ton. In my opinion, he looks for the big hit too much. If he could just focus on playing better positionally (I think he could do that if he chose to) he'd be fine. I'm not certain however that he'll ever do that.

and everyone I know said it was a steal of a deal at the time and was all gaga on getting him.  now he sucks.

He doesn't suck. He's quite good in some areas and not so good in others. In spite of his warts (one of them being his contract) he's still helping us.

Pfft.  He helped us lose last night by standing there doing nothing while Patty got a tip off.  Inconsistent effort.  Why they put him out there for big defensive minutes is a mystery to me.

Nik's post really was bang on.

EDIT: I'd almost go so far as to say that, on balance, he really does approach almost sucking.  Which isn't good enough.  And did I mention his unbenchableness because of the undeserved C?  :P :-X

I'm not sure my post really contradicts anything Nik's did but whatever...

You type fast.  Can you play D?

No... but man, you should see me whale at Hot For Teacher on my kid's Gutair Hero.

I'm pretty good at Gutair myself, after a few brews and some baked beans.  Mmmmm.  :o

Gut-air, sounds like Kevin Smith movie in the making...

I kind of feel like Randy though," I can actually play a lot of these songs on a real guitar".

My sister kicks my ass on that damn game.

Let's not over-react, he's still in a tie for 9th in D scoring with the likes of Yandles and Keith, and that's with him having a poor 2nd half points-wise.  His production from the point is a big part of the reason why our D's offensive production (along with Liles of course) is so improved this season, and has gone a long way to helping balance out the scoring a tad better from the 1st line.

Y'know, something that hasn't been discussed in all this profiling of Phaneuf is how bad Liles has been since he came back, the PP has plummeted to 11th and he has 11 gp 1a -8.

That huge raise he got must have went straight to his head.

Phaneuf is in the top 20 in shots, goals, assists, points, hits, and power-play goals/assists/points.
The only crack against him is his defense, which IMHO is a team wide problem which brings it back on the coach and so-called system they are using.  Burns, Lemaire, Hitchcock, etc... and Phaneuf wins the Norris.

The only crack in our #1 defenseman is his defense

Wouldn't be the first offensive-oriented d-man to not be great defensively.  Duncan Keith, for one, has been criticized a lot lately for his defensive play.
