In your opinion, how good do you think Phaneuf really is?

Phaneuf is in the top 20 in shots, goals, assists, points, hits, and power-play goals/assists/points.
The only crack against him is his defense, which IMHO is a team wide problem which brings it back on the coach and so-called system they are using.  Burns, Lemaire, Hitchcock, etc... and Phaneuf wins the Norris.

The only crack in our #1 defenseman is his defense

Wouldn't be the first offensive-oriented d-man to not be great defensively.  Duncan Keith, for one, has been criticized a lot lately for his defensive play.

Isn't it ironic?

Pfft.  He helped us lose last night by standing there doing nothing while Patty got a tip off.  Inconsistent effort.  Why they put him out there for big defensive minutes is a mystery to me.

Nik's post really was bang on.

EDIT: I'd almost go so far as to say that, on balance, he really does approach almost sucking.  Which isn't good enough.  And did I mention his unbenchableness because of the undeserved C?  :P :-X

He's not living up to his cap hit, but your comments are over the top. He's unbenchable because he's been nowhere near bad enough to warrant it.

Let's not over-react, he's still in a tie for 9th in D scoring with the likes of Yandles and Keith, and that's with him having a poor 2nd half points-wise.

I think it's important to keep his scoring in proper context though. He's got 34 points in 61 games, good for a pace of 46 over a full season. Kaberle last year had 38 points in 58 games which was a 54 point pace.

Kaberle's significantly superior offensive production didn't insulate him from criticism about his defense nor did it mean Wilson didn't jerk him around in terms of ice time.

Is what I would have said if there was a "How good do you think Kaberle really is?" thread.

Pros:
- can hit the cripes out of anyone ( perfected the 'art' of the mid-ice check) thank you, Dion!

- when grumpy, can scare the bejeebus out of the opposition

- can fend for himself, knows when to stand his ground and fight

- works hard and tries to set the example as captain

- sports a decent hard point shot and has proven himself as a scorer & passer

Cons:
- can exhibit poor positional play and get confused around his own net

- not very fleet of feet, er, skates at times (can get caught out of position)

- makes some 'bone-headed plays at times making one wonder how he ever became a defenceman in the first place

- is considered "overrated" by a percentage of the league's players

- earns a large salary, is considered overpaid for his calibre

Y'know, something that hasn't been discussed in all this profiling of Phaneuf is how bad Liles has been since he came back, the PP has plummeted to 11th and he has 11 gp 1a -8.

Its kinda expected. Who hasn't slacked off when the boss just gave you guaranteed millions of dollars.

That huge raise he got must have went straight to his head.

;D
