A tweet from Zaitsev:

:)

So, that's weird.  Zaitsev puts out a tweet of him skating, suggesting his coming back soon, tweet soon disappears.  Leafs management throttling any health status information leaking out?

Leafs coach Mike Babcock says defenceman Roman Polak has undergone surgery, and that his "rehab's going to be a long time"

I know that Polak's value to the club and therefore his future with the club can be a tricky debate, but just from the looks and sounds of it I'd speculate that he wouldn't be ready to start next season on time. Any team who wants to sign him this summer is going to have to tread very carefully.

If he can't find a job because of this injury, I'd be fine giving him another 1-year contract at roughly the same price.

Without getting too crazy, I think you do have to look after your troops when they give it all for the team like Polak did, even if it's as a 7th/8th defenseman. Call him next years Robidas.

Sounds pretty bad for Polak, I wonder if he ever gets back to playing again.  Never know how surgery will go especially at his age.  I wish him the best.

Hopefully he has packed away enough buckski's to make sure his retirement is a good one. It doesnt sound to promising for a return and he is not getting any younger.

Aivis Kalniņ?‏ @A_Kalnins
As for Nikita Zaitsev not taking part at Worlds - Per FHR it's a Concussion.

Cool. Just add this one straight into the concussion lawsuit then.

Some further tweets/updates:

Press release says that Nikita did play in the playoffs, but his condition doesn't allow him to represent national team. Read it as you will

Russian hockey federation now has pulled the press release from their website.

FHR now have edited the press release announcing that the Toronto Maple Leafs have refused to release Nikita Zaitsev to the Worlds.

So his injury status really muddies the waters on a 7-year deal.

That explains Zaitsev's performance in the playoffs. Not explained: how they circumvented the medical clearance that Babcock touted all year to let him play.

I appreciate that he's a gamer and will play through, but this is no bueno.

It's entirely possible (AKA: likely) the NHL and the IIHF have different standards regarding concussions.

That sounds plausible. And stupid (not you, busta; the NHL).

Zaitsev could also be cleared to play medically but the Leafs could say "we aren't going to allow you to play for a team other than our own" and hold that 7-year extension over his head.

True. He may be good to go, but the team may feel the risk of occurrence or a setback means more to them than his playing for a team other than the Leafs.

I think this is more likely...I can't imagine the Leafs circumvented any protocols here...it's a guy they're apparently looking at a 7 year deal on, and they weren't all-in on a Cup run here.

I would imagine that this has more to do with precaution in terms of re-injury than anything else.

This is pretty good news, insofar as a severe leg injury can ever be considered a good news.
