Islanders @ Maple Leafs - Nov. 21st, 7:30pm - SN, Fan 590

Can?t believe how useless these guys are 3 on 3. Waste of a point because these guys are clueless. Thanks Kallgren should never have gone to OT.

Maybe in the end it won't matter but they are just pissing away points with these inept OT performances.

To review: in OT we ...

... can't start Matthews & Marner & Rielly
... can't start Matthews & Nylander
... can't play Tavares with anybody
... can't win when Robertson is in the pressbox

Does this team not practice three on three overtime ? Man alive that was horrible.

I don?t get it so much talent and completely out of sync in OT. Whole thing in OT is keeping possession these guys keep giving it away.

also i think Brodie is the only dman I would trust in 3 on 3, and obviously not an option at the moment...Gio way too slow

I liked Liljegren out there given the options.  I'd try Sandin too.  Holl, no.  His strengths don't translate well to open ice.  Gio before Holl.

U want guys that are mobile out there. Holl is too slow. Given the injury to Morgan only two I would throw out there on D are the 2 Swedes.

The Swedes were all good tonight I thought, yes, even Engvall. Holmberg looking more comfortable.

Engvall looked like a difference-maker.  He really benefits by not having to play center.

Matthews, Robertson, Rielly the only combo that scored so far in OT...
I find Marner, Rielly and so far JT lose any defensive awareness they usually have in OT. Nylander should be stapled to the bench for his performance in OT tonight. That was the worst display of the season so far.
I would like to see Matthews with a guy like Engvall, or Malgin type guy. I'd even try Kampf out there.
Anyway Leafs deserved better tonight, Kallgren let them down but he still played well overall.

I was working so didn't see all of the game but thanks to some bad weather caught decent chunks of the game...including pretty much the whole 3rd period/OT.  From what I saw the Leafs were the better team by a decent margin.  I'm not going to be happy with the atrocious OT efforts but at least the team is looking good 5 on 5 (aside from scoring...)

Tying goal was all on Kallgren, but that 3rd goal sure looks to me like it tipped off Holl's stick. Hard to make that save if it did.

My OT take and why it isn't working is that they're standing still. It's almost reminiscent of when the powerplay struggles. They're trying to make their sticks do all the work. If the other team is skating, it's not going to work. Watch Nylander on that giveaway. He stops and then passively throws the puck back. Why? What is the thought there? On the goal against, I have no real issue with how they played it. Everyone has a man. Only slight issue I can see is Holl gives up a little too much gap entering the zone which allows the crossing pattern that essentially allows the Isles player to walk into the upper house. But that's nitpicking.

Willy threw it back because he was gassed, Matthews was gassed (thanks to his previous two attempts to spring Matthews turning into icings). He wanted to avoid icing it again but fanned on the pass, similar to Sandin's giveaway to Crosby rolling off his stick's heel. Nylander wasn't the only player to give the puck to the Islanders in that OT.

Their issue definitely is standing still; same problem that they run into when their PP goes stale. Too much space is too confusing?

Even though he's a space cadet and has no creativity, Engvall is suitably equipped to run laps in the OT with his speed, reach. Let him roam free.

It seems to me that the main issue with this team as currently configured is that it just can't handle pressure situations. Can't come up big in playoffs, especially game 7s, and can't get it done in OT. Marner, as great as he can be, just can't seem to help himself when it comes to risky, high danger passes.
