Jared McCann is a Leaf [edit: nevermind]

I think people are overvaluing Mccann...and Kerfoot for that matter.  Holl at 2M is far more valuable than McCann at 3M and kerfoot at 3.5

If they hadn't traded for McCann would they have had to expose Holl? I thought they went 7-3-1 and Holl was one of the three?
Why would Holl be in that 3? Rielly, Muzzin, Brodie is your 3.

Exactly. Holl would have been unprotected and gone.

So they didn't protect Holl?

Sorry maybe I'm missing your point here. If they went 7-3-1 Holl would not be protected.

I misremembered that they went 7-3-1 instead of 8-1 but I'm trying to figure out why people are saying that if we didn't make the McCann trade we'd have lost Holl.

Or, I guess, what this has to do with Holl at all. Absent the McCann trade we lose one of Dermott or Kerfoot probably, right?

I think some discussion has been that the Leafs should have went with the 7F and 3D protection format to protect McCann and expose Holl (which would have resulted in Seattle likely taking Holl).

Leafs went 8 skaters - 1 goalie. Holl was always going to be protected. Basically the Leafs traded for McCann and added him to the mix of exposed players.

Exactly.

Huh. Well I suppose that goes back to what I was saying about the McCann trade not really making sense unless you really wanted McCann on the team but honestly I don't know how to look at this shuffling without coming to the conclusion that the Leafs have almost no confidence in any of their prospects in the short or near term which strikes me as a bigger deal than just who they lost in the expansion draft.

I assume you're excepting Sandin but yeah, you wonder if Liljegren is still in their plans, or if he ever really was.

I'm not sure why you pay for the privilege of keeping Kerfoot or Dermott.

Even Sandin though. If you're confident he can be a really solid player do you stress much about losing Dermott or Holl? I know, I know, the handedness and everything but still.

Also, I think Kerfoot has largely proven that while he's a good player, he's just not a great fit on this Leafs team.
Kerfoot was one of the few players that actually did well these past playoffs. He really stepped it up in Tavares' spot and has 9pts in his last 12 playoff games. McCann has 3 in 12 career playoff games.

That's true but 3 goals in 30 playoff games doesn't move the needle much for me. I'd prefer the better defence of McCann patrolling the third line or be interested to see his point totals centering a hot Nylander in the playoffs.

I don't really think there's much evidence to suggest that McCann is better defensively than Kerfoot. I prefer McCann and have been open about that since he was acquired, but I think his upgrades over Kerfoot revolve around his shot/offence, age, and cap hit. They're both good two way players but I think Kerfoot might even have a slight edge there. At the very least I'd call it a wash.

This was a decision between losing:

Holl or Dermott (McCann trade, 7-3-1)
Hallander and 7th/McCann (McCann trade, 4-4-1)
Holl or Dermott (no trade, 7-3-1)
Kerfoot or Dermott (no trade, 4-4-1)

I find it difficult to have a strong opinon on which we should have let go.

And realistically if McCann is a real upgrade on Kerfoot and would have a good year with the Leafs he's only affordable for a year anyways.
