Jerseygate 14/15

Does this annoy anyone else?

On jersey's being tossed onto the ice in Winnipeg: ?That?s just what we go through playing in Toronto,? van Riemsdyk said. ?There?s going to be people jumping off the bandwagon just as quick as they?re jumping back on.? http://www.thestar.com/sports/leafs/2015/01/04/maple_leafs_possession_regression_raises_carlyle_questions_feschuk.html

It's not the dismissal of the jersey toss that irks me. It sounds like he's playing the victim card. That's what they go through at the hands of the fans. As if we're being unreasonable. We've been watching a team of losers for a decade now. There should be some empathy from the team. Yes, I know JVR hasn't been around for those 10 years, but that's a lame comment too, which others in the past have made (not JVR that I know of).

I mean boohoo, you have to see a jersey get tossed on the ice once in a while. The fans have it much worse, we have to watch you jerks play!

I just can't shake the feeling that the players don't give a crap if they win or lose.

I think for a player to make the NHL or any other professional sport, they have to be super competitive, the leader of all the teams they have every played on, excelled in their position and have dedicated a huge portion of their lives to developing the skills to become an NHL player.
I don't buy the I don't care argument. They do care and very much, but it takes a load of talent and a huge amount of chemistry to make a winning team.  I think this team is frustrated as many teams are. They want to win more than anything.

I think it's about as diplomatic an answer as he can give. I don't think it helps anything for him to say "We stink and deserve to have jerseys thrown at us".

I agree, but it would have been much more entertaining if he said 'this is what teams go through when they're sucking'.

Maybe but to his credit that's not really true. If this were happening in Florida or Phoenix fans wouldn't be throwing jerseys, they just wouldn't be showing up. More so.

Well it's not happening in Florida because they're better than the Leafs!

Seriously though, he should've said "this is what we have to go through playing under Randy Carlyle"

No team or player is going to hang his coach through the press anymore.

I think fans toss jerseys the way sometimes players lose it and go down the hallway and smash the ever living crap out of their sticks. It isn't really the stick's fault, but you're frustrated and you've had enough and in the moment you feel super dramatic and you just have to do something.  I'm sure sometimes the players want to throw their jerseys, too.

What the team is doing isn't working and absolutely nothing is being done to change it. They will keep playing like this until there's a shakeup, and there are no shakeups in sight. That is a breeding ground for frustration all around - players, management, and fans.

So, yes, it IS something they just have to put up with. We're all going to have to do a lot of putting-up-with: players will have to put up with another collapse, and players are going to have to put up with a steady supply of airborne jerseys. Until something big changes.

I've almost always been of the same opinion, but if it were true, I would expect them to not consistently get outshot, year after year!, and not have a coach that is pulling his hair out trying to get them to listen. Hence my growing concern that they don't care. Maybe it's just that they don't care as much as other teams.

I assume you're one of the guys that think Carlyle is the problem?

It probably is a diplomatic answer, but yeah, it would have been better had he said something like "the fans are frustrated, we understand that."

Maybe I'm just finally fed up.

I still think the jersey throwing is idiotic. We get it, you're mad. Stop going to games. Wear a bag over your head. Bring a sign that says how peeved you are. Throwing your jersey on the ice is childish in my books.

I think it's great that JvR is calling out the fans that are ready to hang themselves after a couple losses and setting up their lawn chair on the parade route after a couple wins.

It's not "a couple losses".

People still think these fans exist?

I call it a decade of losing. They made the playoffs once in a decade and the end of that playoff run was one of the most heartbreaking ends I've ever seen.

Your right Bill Berg. I a not a fan of Carlyle and its not that I blame him totally. I do rant on about chemisty a lot. Yes you have to have the talent but chemistry is a mystery and you only realize it when a mediocre talent goes and wins the division or further on even.
Its almost something realized as it happens and looked at in retrospect.
Yes we need a #1 Center and yes a bonifide stud on defence but we also need the Komorav's, Santorelli's and Winneks to complement the JVR's and Kessels to make this team work.

I don't disagree that those things are important, but I believe more and more every week that the drive is not where it needs to be.

I think that at least a part of the chemistry people talk about is created by an intense desire to win by playing a team game. I don't see much of that in Toronto, at least not as much as I see in other teams.

Who the hell are these people who can afford to throw away these jerseys? That's $80 a jersey!

Same people who can regularly afford hockey tickets, I suppose.

And what does throwing your jersey on the ice do other than disrupt the game and cost you $100? Stop going to the games. Stop watching. Change teams.
