Matthews is HM and not just because of his offence.
 
To me you have to let Samsonov get the next game.  The Leafs play a lot this week. 
 
Fun game. Marner was terrific as well. Considering he's playing with a player they got for the third line, and Tavares who has lost a step 5 on 5, it's incredible how he's doing.
 
Let's briefly review Matthews' first goal tonight again, shall we?

He takes control of the 2nd period opening faceoff and then walkety-walks Mark Scheifele, leaving the vaunted Winnipeg skater spinning helplessly near center ice. Then, in a straight-line burst of speed, he absolutely power-washes putative Vezina candidate Connor Hellebuyck five-hole, reducing him to a smoldering heap of embarassment.

Oh, it was a beautiful, beautiful thing to behold.

I think Tavares' main problem is he's not processing the game fast enough. Skating has always been a sore spot for him. But now I don't think his brain is keeping up.
 
On a completely unrelated note, I just recognised, half way through the season - this forum is named 2021/22 Game Day Threads :-D
