Kadri facing possible suspension (edit: 3 games)

Man, if I didn't already know the suspension and just found out at the end of the video I would have been stunned. The way Shanahan described it you'd think he was getting a fine or something.

Yeah. It really sounds like they're going to give him a slap on the wrist and then, boom, 3 games.

@dshoalts

Shanahan said 3 games for Kadri boiled down to this: It wasn't intentional but he didn't do enough to avoid "or minimize" hit on Backstrom.

Said similar things for the Tootoo suspension as well.

So Jay McLement is our #2 center for 3 games.  Awesome. Suddenly back-to-backs against Buffalo are going to be in question.

3 goals in their last 4 games.  1 ES goal in their last 4 games.

I'm confused.  Shanahan makes it sound a lot lighter than 3 games.  I don't know how he goes from "no intent, light contact" to 3 games.

I'm comfortable with 3 games (would have gone with 2 or 3 myself) because I don't buy that it wasn't at least blatantly negligent.  Kadri made effectively no effort to get out of the way or arrest his movement, he gets in there entirely on his own, the principal point of contact was the head, and it still looks to me like he follows through a bit (though not as much as it appears from some angles).

But I recognize that I have one of the more severe opinions on the hit, and Shanahan seems to have interpreted it as a lot lighter than I did - yet he still gave him 3 games.  WTF.

Do they seriously just spin a wheel over there?

My belief is that had only one of the incidents incurred in the game instead of two, Kadri wouldn't have gotten 3 games.

But doesn't that inherently speak to a problem with the system.  If you want to suspend Kadri 2 games for the one incident and give him 1 game for the Granlund hit, fine.  But do that.  I don't see how you can just argue that there was a not-so-great hit later in the game and so therefore the punishment for the 1st is going to be compounded.  The collision with Backstrom was not a 3-game suspension worthy play.  Bottom line.

Yeah, that's what I think too.

The announcers even commented on Kadri hitting everything.

That being said, I think 3 games is too much but I did feel a suspension was warranted.

I'm very surprised it's more than one game. Though I still contend it wasn't a suspendable incident, I could have lived with one game for recklessness, but three is too much.

I actually thought it would work the opposite.  I thought because he got a penalty on that clean hit that they'd go easy on him since he was booted from that game for a clean hit.

I posted the same thing as Peter earlier in the thread, and (obviously) I think we're right.  The problem is, you are operating on the assumption that there is some rational, tiered system of justice that Shanahan is following.  There isn't, and since there isn't, appearances count.  (I know you know all this, it's a rhetorical way of making the point.)  Kadri's rep for cockiness, combined with the second hit, gave Shanny leeway to make it 3.

Optics > disinterested justice.

But this idea that NOW we're in for it against BUF because Kadri's out?  God, we'd better hope we're above that.  The Sabers suck.  They will continue to suck, despite Nolan, Patty, and no Kadri.  If we are a playoff team, we'll sweep them.  If we can't do that much, then we don't deserve to make the postseason.

We better hope we're above our top 3 C out?  You're not giving Buffalo enough credit.  The Leafs can barely score at 5 on 5 now, and Miller is still great.

I should give them credit for being ... 4-15-1?  OK, I will then.  Done.

I'm pretty sure the conversion factor is that 2 games against Buffalo are the equivalent of 1 game against a real NHL team.

I agree, we better beat them. Also three games, WOW!!!!! what crap that was. One game maybe but three, I think Shanny is loosing it.

Giving them enough credit in the context of a Leafs team without it's top 3 C and that has been outplayed nearly every game this season.  Buffalo has beat a couple really good teams recently.  This isn't some cakewalk.
