Kapanen traded

Just heard Kapi was traded to Pittsburgh, not sure of anything as yet but looks like we get 15th 1st round pick and some Kapi space.

from the Sun:  The Kapanen element was first reported by Elliotte Friedman of Sporstnet, then the full deal was released by the Leafs, with them getting the pick lost in the Patrick Marleau trade to Carolina, plus left winger Evan Rodrigues, centre Filip Hallander and defenceman David Warsofsky.

The complete deal....Maple Leafs have acquired the Penguins' first round selection in the 2020 NHL Draft (15th overall), F Evan Rodrigues, F Filip Hallander and D David Warsofsky in exchange for F Kasperi Kapanen, F Pontus Aberg and D Jesper Lindgren.
Great deal for the Leafs. Hallander by all accounts will be an NHL player, along with the 15th overall and got cap space.

I think Dubas did really well here. To get their mid-round 1st back, and shed the full cap hit isn't robbery, but it borders on underage shoplifting.

Kapanen is a nice complimentary player, but he's pretty much topped out in terms of what he's likely to contribute - and to get that space back, along with assets, and not taking back bad money in a flat cap era (I assume they don't have top qualify rodrigues) is terrific.

Decent deal all around. Pittsburgh does well and I think Kapanen will fit in very well there. Apparently they were also trying to shed salary and they do that since Kappi's salary drops below his cap hit.

I'm sad to see Kapanen go, but he makes better sense for the Pens than Johnsson.

It's a really good deal, I think. Hallander is a real prospect and between him and the 15th it'll add some desperately needed depth to the system.

Kapanen's a good player but, honestly, I think with that cap space you could get a comparable UFA every year.

Very pleased with the return on this deal. We needed to move out salary and as good as Kappy has been he just doesn't slot in as a top 6 forward with us so he makes the most sense to move for value. Getting a mid-1st is a very nice surprise and it sounds as though Hallander has some bottom-6 potential. Looks as though the 3rd line wing spot is now Richardson's EDIT: Robertson's to lose.

Dudas seemed to allude to the possibility that he would not be using this pick when he spoke today. Guessing he has more irons in the fire.

You mean Robertson? I'll be shocked if he's not with the club. i think Barbanov will be as well and possibly Lehtonen . There will be other moves coming and I think TJ Brodie is a strong possibility. I'm sure they'll look at Pietrangelo as well to see if that can fit.

I didn't hear that but if the right D man were to be made available, I'm sure they'd use the pick if needed.

I don't remember the last time the Leafs made a trade that was almost universally considered a steal for them like this one. Maybe JVR for Schenn? When I heard it was Kapanen for the 15th overall pick I thought that alone was a huge win for Dubas. But getting Hallander as well is just robbery it seems. The fact that Dubas was able to pull this off despite every other team knowing that he needed to create cap space is impressive. Granted this is just the start of what he needs to accomplish this offseason.

Woops...senior's moment. Yes, Robertson. I'd be shocked too, although he's one of those odd ones who can't play in the AHL due to his age so he either has to win a roster spot (and not 13th man duties...he needs development) or he has to be sent back to Junior which I presume won't help him in the slightest.

I wouldn't really be surprised if the Leafs attempt to keep Evan Rodrigues in the fold. He doesn't get qualified at $2mil, but the Leafs could still work something else out. His numbers with Buffalo in the 17/18 and 18/19 make him look like a decent bottom-6 forward option.

I like that Dubas likes to make win-win trades for both parties.

Kapanen immediately slots into their top-6 on paper (haha we?ll see how they like it when Kapanen goes tunnel vision) as Rutherford keeps trying to pry the contention window open for the remainder of Crosby and Malkin?s careers.

Leafs get flexibility on the cap and in the lineup with players better suited for the roles available. Moving a third liner + stuff on our depth chart for the haul of an average first line winger is gravy.

Trade analysis and scouting reports on H?llander

https://mapleleafshotstove.com/2020/08/25/kyle-dubas-on-kasperi-kapanen-trade/

Dubas? press conference from earlier this evening.
What exactly do you like about Filip Hallander?

Dubas: He is a player that, going back to the draft, he was rated near the top of our board when we picked in the second round. We selected Sean Durzi and then Pittsburgh selected him the pick right after if my memory serves me correctly. He was right there for us. We were kind of hoping he would fall to the next pick we had gotten in a previous trade.

The things that we like about him as a player: Extremely intelligent, very competitive, and has shown very well playing in the Swedish Elite League on a very good team and program. We are excited for him. He will certainly add to our depth in our prospect pool up front. We are really excited to add Filip today.

Durzi was pick 52. Pens picked Calen Addison at 53 and then H?llander at 58 later. Toronto?s next available pick was Semyon Der-Arguchintsev at 76.

Of course any Toronto Pittsburgh grade is going to bring up the question of goalies. LeBrun reports that former Soo Greyhound Matt Murray, the goalie Rutherford is shopping, was not part of this trade conversation at all.
