Kappi vs Johnsson

If this thread was titled Kappi vs Nylander, I would still choose Kappi.  His speed is top end and we are seeing hands and play making ability that we didn't see when he was under utilized on fourth line.  Plus he has a physical presence and strength to go along with the skill which is an asset lacking among this forward group. Very effective on PK to boot.

If he keeps playing the way he has been and continues to flank Matthews, I could honestly see him asking for Nylander type dollars. In hindsight, they really should of tried extending him long term this past summer.

As I started this thread we can now close it. Its not even close, we need to keep Kappi on this team.

Think you spoke too soon? Johnsson (19 points in 36 games, 0.53 PPG) is starting to catch up to Kapanen (25 points in 41 games, 0.61 PPG). Johnsson also has 16 points in his last 18 games while Kapanen has 4 in his last 12.

Putting aside the "do we have to trade one" conversation for a second, it'll be interesting to see who finishes the season with more points.

If Kapanen continues to play with Kadri and Marleau, while Johnsson gets more time with Matthews, I have no doubt Johnsson will make it interesting.

As I mentioned in the GDT awhile back, having Hyman out for an extended period has been an interesting utility exercise to see who can play complementary roles in the top 6. If it was up to me, Hyman would be on the 3rd line/PK duty.

I wouldn't mind a Johnsson/Kadri/Kapanen line to see how that goes.

Nah he does his job on the Tavares/Marner line. I used to rag on Hyman a lot, and still get annoyed a little when Babcock showers him in praise, but he knows how to be an effective player with two offensive talents. A guy like Brown might be a similar player to him in a 3rd line role but I don't think he's done a good job adjusting his game to fit with Tavares and Marner. Hyman gets that spot when he returns, and Brown gets dropped to the 4th line, and those are probably your forward lines for the rest of the season (barring injuries).

Just a revisit on this thread. I love Kappi, his speed, his flair, his hair. Undoubtable a major talent. But after the last few games it becomes clear to me that Johnsson is the more complete player, defensivly responsible, digs in the corners like Hyman and Brown, skates pretty damn fast, but he has what Kappi so frustratingly doesn't have, he has the finish, the touch around the net, he has that being in the right place at the right time quality and can put the puck in the net.

When this thread had a little life it seems that Kappi was the hands down choice, for me I would choose Johnsson, it it becomes a choice that we have to make

You're not really learning the right lesson here. You/others thought Kapanen was the far superior player based on about a months or so worth of solid play. Now you've switched to saying that Johnsson is the better player because of... a months or so worth of solid play.

Ya and I only see him getting better and better.  Kapi's offence is more one dimensional all built on streaking speed which is great and exciting and I do love him.  I definitely want to keep them both but Johnsson does have a more complete game, no doubt. And he is playing 4th line minutes, he could turn the Goat into an offensive wizard.

None of these guys are worth losing much sleep over. Especially with a decent depth of talent in the system on the wing. It's been a while but soon enough Leafs fans will remember that with really talented offensive players on the team finding guys who can chip in a few points while playing alongside them isn't the trickiest thing in the world and it's one of the areas where the team should be looking to save cap money.

Here's a thought. Lot of people say one of Kappi or maybe Johnsson will have to go because of salary cap. People have mentioned Brown heading out the door but why not Hyman too? Who do you keep? Kappi and Johnsson or Hyman and Brown. Both sets will likely cost the same. Easy for me, K and J stay. 4.3 out the door and you should be able to get both K and J for 5 mill tops.

I really hope the Leafs can keep both of these guys. Maybe if they trade Zaitsev and Gardiner. Another move also possibly. We'll see what Dubas does. It looks like this year and next year are their window. I'm not sure if this season is the year to go all in. We'll see. Tampa looks really strong. I'm hoping Tampa and Boston have to face each other in the first round of the playoffs. Boston is the worst. They will wear the Leafs down.

So Johnsson is eligible for arbitration? Where would you guestestimate that would shake out at? $2.75 x 1 year? $3M x 2 years? I would take what hockeyfan1's charts show. Not exactly sure how the arbitration process works.
